My wife's care home insists on a payment one month in advance is this compulsory

It's very common and if in the contract compulsory.

We paid the LA for FIL , they paid for 6 months until we got Deputyship and then we paid them back and then paid monthly in arrears . This did result in a bill for unpaid time being sent just after he had died. We were OK with that but some people might find it difficult to deal with at that time.
We pay in advance for MIL , this saves the 'bill after dying' situation and any overpayment will be returned.
