Hi all. I've been considering making a claim for care home fees but when I've read up on it, it all seems so complicated. I know there are solicitors who will do it for you on a 'no win - no fee' basis but a 'win' could mean a 30% fee which I'd rather avoid as I'm sure I could manage it myself.
So I'm just wondering, has anyone else out there done this and if so, what was the outcome? Is it really as complicated as it seems?

Hi, There is some info from Age UK on how to go about reclaiming Care Home fees, I can not post a link to it on here it wont allow me . If you go on Age Uk site you will be able to find it though.

A friend of mine is actually doing this and as always it is a long process, so far she has managed to get her late dads medical records and sent them off to the PCT in charge of her case.
I wish you well with this and I am sure more help will be available to you as and when you need it.

I recently won my case for the reimbursement of my late husband's care home fees but I chose to go through a firm off solicitors who specialise in these claims for wrongly withheld NHS funding.

My case took two and a half years from start to finish and there is no way I could have won on my own. They specialise in these claims and are experts. Before they take on a case they will spend time collating all the care home records, doctors records etc etc and then they will only proceed if they think you have a good case.

I certainly didn't pay fees of 30%. I was given the name of this firm by someone on TP and if you are interested then please PM me.

    Good luck.

    Hi,

I too won my case. I did it with help from family members, without a solicitor, but I would say it was long and drawn out. The various organizations put obstacles along the way, and it was hard at times, but worth it in the end to know i did the right thing. My parents were given misguided information when entering a care home and made to self fund. I got all the fees reimbursed for my parents.

If you do decide to proceed without professional help keep records of everything. Do it by written methods but if you do have to speak over the telephone, log the call date, time, who you spoke to etc. keep a diary too.

    Stay positive.

    Regards lotti

    Thank you

Thanks to you all for your comments.
I'm astounded that the whole process could take so long! Typical I suppose.
I think perhaps I'll contact one of the specialist solicitors because I've been paying fees for a while now and I really don't think I can face the arduous task of remembering dates and places or tracking down records as I'd be doing it largely on my own. It's good to know whoever I choose will have an idea at the outset whetherf I have a chance of getting anywhere and will advise me accordingly - something I myself couldn't possibly know if doing myself. I'll be careful who I choose though given that my info on fees may be misplaced - PM's would be great!
I'll check out the Age UK site for info as suggested.....didn't think of that.

    Once again, thank you!
