Care home concerns

Hi
So after a 12 week stay in hospital my dad was finally discharged to an EMI unit - about 30 min drive away but we had no choice as the only one in the area with a bed . This was supposed to be for 4 weeks whilst the CHC funding assessment was done .
Dad has been in a week and I went to see him on Weds and he was fast asleep at 2 but they said his behaviour had continued to be very challenging and aggressive .
When I got there I was shocked at how he looked as his face was very thin and he had a grey complexion but put it down to him being asleep . I noticed he had a mark under his eye and when I asked they couldn’t explain how he’d got it.
Later that night I got a call to say dad had fallen in the shower ( he has 24 hr 1-1 care) onto his wrist but they didn’t think it was broken .
My sister went yesterday and they had called an ambulance as his arm was swollen and she noticed that the mark was a black eye .
I got a call at 9 last night to say dads carer was with him at the hospital but she had to leave as her shift had ended but they couldn’t send another as they weren’t contracted to do so . I went to sit with him and dad has broken his arm in 2 places !
They put a temporary cast on but he was again violent and aggressive . I left at 12 as was exhausted and the plan was to transport him back to his home.
We got a call at 6 this morning to say dad had ripped his cast off and could we go back to be with him.

I have some concerns about the care from the home but don’t know if I’m overreacting . Thanks

I'm sorry to hear what has happened to your dad and can understand how worried and exhausted you must be. I would want a full explanation from the care home manager as to how the marks on your dad's face have happened. If he is receiving 24 hour one to one care they should know. It sounds as though they are struggling to manage him for whatever reason so I would query if this was the right place for him. I would also want assurance that he had been receiving the one to one care he was supposed to be having. I hope things improve for you.

Its actually very difficult to prevent falls, even if you are standing right next to them.
When mum fell and broke her wrist in her care home I had to accompany her to the hospital - its a pretty normal thing to happen. Mum too kept trying to remove her cast, because she didnt understand what it was or why it was there.

Thanks I guess it wasn’t just the accompanying him - there were just a number of things that were said and done which has made me question whether the home could cope with dad.
Social services have now intervened and have stopped him being discharged back to the home so he is now back in hospital ?

I dont think I appreciated the extent of the concerns, but if SS are saying he cant go back then this is actually good. If you get a choice, ask the care homes what behaviour they would not be able to deal with. Unfortunately there are quite a few homes that claim to be dementia specialist, but cannot cope with the more advanced/challenging stages of dementia. I have noticed that a lot of homes that cannot cope suggest 1 -1 care. I think you are probably going to have to look further afield for the right home. I do hope you find it

Thanks - I was too emotional last night to properly explain how concerned I was. The final straw today is that he’s had seizures because no one had provided the hospital with details of his medication !
I’m going to speak to Sw on Monday to see if they will look fit someone else more suited and if not as a last resort I’m going to ask him to be sectioned as think that’s the only way we ar going to get anywhere ?

OMG, that is so dangerous  I do hope the medication has now been properly sored out.

I dont have any experience of sectioning, but I know quite a few people on here have and they found it helpful in getting their person with dementia the help and care they needed.

My dad was eventually sectioned while he was in hospital after a nightmare time of the hospital trying to send him home with no capacity unable to stand, walk or do anything for himself. They insisted he was back to normal and could do all these things!

He was put on a section 2 which meant he couldn’t be discharged for 4 weeks. It was a massive relief for me and eventually lead to a carehome placement where he spent the rest of his life. If you’re offered the chance of sectioning take it.

Thank you that is good to hear. I have asked the Sw to section him as he is a danger to himself and others so will see what happens now . Thanks
