Our father has alzheimers and -- to cut a long story short - we had to take the awful step of putting him into a home at the weekend. He is fighting like never before and becoming more aggressive by the day. He is actually making himself ill he is so distraught. He is on medication now (aricept equivalent). He cannot go home as he is not safe - are there other medications? How do we quickly get a solution as the home may throw him out if he carries on fighting this and we dont know what else to do - if he gets sectioned and put into an EMI home - that would be awful. We desperately want him to stay in the home we have selected but they wont be able to keep him if he carries on trying to escape/being rude etc. Does anyone know a private or otherwise person who specialising in Dementia?? help!

Forum T&Cs prevent anybody posting details of a particular psychiatrist, members ,however, can send you a personal message (PM).

Have you asked the GP if (s)he can recommend anybody?

Why do you want that particular care home? If they cant cater for his needs then he will not be properly looked after and the care home would be right to refuse him.

Mum is in an EMI care home as she was constantly going walkabout and she has settled down well

Getting sectioned will mean that he is cared for and meds tried that may make him easier to live with. There are people on here whose carees have been sectioned several times and it is the best thing that has happened to them. Dont you want the best?

With regards to sectioning, that was something I didn't want to happen to my late husband, but with hindsight, it may have helped him. I had awful pictures in my head.

The whole process sounds dreadful, but it isn't. They will take you dad to a unit where he can be well looked after and his medication adjusted to keep him safe and the people around him safe too. Once his meds are considered to be right for him, they will then want him to go into a suitable care home that can cater for his needs.

If he is sectioned under section 3, he will also qualify for section 117 funding.

Thank you for the replies to my post

Thanks everyone for the responses. This is our first experience of alzheimers/mental health challenges in the extreme (he was diagnosed 5 years ago and we have managed to keep him at home with help until now) and your comments about Sectioning not being so bad are extremely helpful and reassuring to us all.

The home today are saying that because dad keeps scaling the fence to escape (!) they find it difficult to stop him. He is very physically well and can take care of himself to feed and dress himself - unfortunately it is his mind and cognitive ability that is the hit and miss bit!

The hospital that he is in has accelerated the medical support and we should get some assistance immediately.

So my next question is... can anyone recommend an EMI care home in Lancashire? the one he is in is supposed to be EMI but that is the one that cant cope with him unless he stops trying to escape/being aggressive.

Of course, we may end up with him being sectioned.
Lordy lord!

My husband is in a nursing home that specialises in challenging behaviour. The staff ratio is higher and all the carers are speciallyy trained to deal with all sorts of difficult problems, the kind your Father is displaying. It is all done without extra medication or a raised voice. Sadly we are no where near Lancashire and I know such care homes are few and far between, we found just two in our county.

I hope you can find somewhere in your area similar, the care has made such a difference to my husband and to us, his family.

Replies can only be by PM, Lancashire is a big place, if you posted the first part of your postcode it would be helpful.

In my opinion any home that claims to be EMI but cannot cope with residents trying to escape and presenting challenging behaviour (unless extreme and violent) does not warrant the EMI status.

A serious comment, is to look at the fence height when visiting. Where Roger was, they had added trellis and plants to extend the height of the fence as one gentleman had managed to scale the 6 foot fence in one run!! (That was some time ago.)

When I was visiting care homes with a friend, she was looking at the escape possibilities too.
