Hi guys.

My brother is planning to take over caring duties from me in April next year and I was wondering if anyone knew how to go about transferring the CA as smoothly as possible.

I used the on-line service to apply for Carers Allowance quite recently and it is very good, the first link is where your brother would apply for CA (and it will be backdated if it takes them time to sort it out) the second link is where you report your change of circumstances. They may take a week or two to sort it so you may get an overpayment which they'll want back but I found it pretty simple to use.
If as lin suggests you want to go down the phone route then you'll need NI numbers for everyone involved, details of earnings, previous employment and a few other things all in all I found doing it on-line was easiest because it gave me time to find all the bits they wanted rather than making repeated phone call each time I didn't have the right piece of paper to hand.
