Bowel changes.

My 93 years old father, has new bowel problems.
He has dementia and is wheelchair bound. He also has a suprapubic catheter.
He has always suffered with constipation. This week he has had bowel movements every day without being aware. His diet hasn’t changed and he isn’t unwell. The stools are becoming increasingly loose. The clean up process is lengthy. My question is: Is the loss of bowel control something that happens at the end stage?

Hello @Daughterwifemothergranny and welcome to DTP

My OH has a urethral catheter for urine retention and the same thing is happening to his bowels, although it is not yet every day. Yes, Im afraid that incontinence (both bladder and bowel) is part of the progression of dementia.
Can you get him to wear pull-up incontinance pants which will make the clean up easier? Ask your GP for a referral to your local continence clinic.
