Hi, I have just joined Talking Point . Our stepfather has Dementia, he has been in a nursing home now for 3 years. As his condition has now worsened, the home he's paid for , for the last 3 years now has given notice for him to be moved out. We think this is so wrong as we were told he would have a place there for the rest of his life! It seems as though now his illness has become more difficult they want him moved out :(
This is so unfair as the cost has been substantial:confused:

Hi Boo, welcome to TP
Sorry to here about your situation, it is something that crops up on here every now and again and it's always difficult. To be fair to the care home if his condition has now got past the point then can cope they have a duty of care to him and the other residents to do something. You don't say if they can't cope medically or is it behavioural? Either way it brings into question if something happened would they be insured, could they be held liable for acting beyond their remit.
I would contact Social Service and ask them for advice, I take it from what you've said he's self funding but even so they are still obliged to help as he is a vulnerable person, they may do no more than tell you what alternative places exist that can cope with his needs which will give you somewhere to start.

Hi Boo, and welcome, sorry you have found us.:)
I presume Dad's Care Home is not a specialist Dementia Home, but have you spoken to the management and asked what the problem is? If his behaviour is causing problems with other residents, then it may be that any medication he is taking may be in need of tweaking, likewise he may have a Urinary Tract Infection of similar. A UTI can cause havoc to the system in a Dementia Patient. Ask his GP to give him the once over.
Is Dad self funding and do you have a Social Worker? If you contact the Local Authority Adult Social Care, they ought to be able to provide you with a ist of homes ( hopefully with vacancies) that might be suitable.
Have you claimed Attendance Allowance for Dad, every little helps with the cost.
Do you know if Dad has donated an LPA for Health and Welfare and one for Legal and Financial power to anyone?
I hope this helps a bit, but there is always a fount of information on TP.
Good Luck and keep posting.

Hello boo and welcome to Talking Point.

It must be very stressful for you. Is your stepfather in a dementia NH, or a general one that also accepts dementia? Unfortunately, the need to move does happen fairly often on here and its usually because they are not in a dedicated dementia NH.

Actually, if his needs are beyond what the NH can provide for then it would not be safe for him to remain where he is, so I would bite the bullet and start looking around for somewhere else. It is always wise to be very frank about his behaviour and also ask exactly what behaviour the NH would not be able to cope with when you are talking to a them about possible placement.

If he is not self-funded then you need to contact SS and work with them about a suitable placement

Hi yes my stepfather is in a Dementia/ nursing home. He's had his meds changed now, we have looked @ a few new places but so far have found none suitable, only places too far ? S, services are involved & doing their best for us. It's been going on now for a couple of month's, just so very stressful , we do appreciate he needs to be in the right place with the right care & support. He's always been a vey quiet Person no trouble at all. But with this illness things change as we all know .

I remember well where I was and what I was doing when I got the " your mum needs to be moved to somewhere more suitable " call. I cried buckets thinking of the impact on her and she and we loved the home so much. We moved her she didn't even notice. We did get somewhere fairly close to us though, which was a relief .

I'm happy your mum was fine with this, we just hope our stepfather will be ? he is being assessed this week for CHC funding ? :(

Hi, our stepfather hasn't been too well the past week , his med's have been changed ! We will hopefully see if they have any effect in a week or two.
His assessment did not go to Panel last week as too many for them to hear. We doubt he will get the funding but just want him to be settled. :)

Im so sorry to hear that Boo, I do hope you find the right place soon
xx

Hi,our stepfather is now in a hospital where he has been assessed accurately.. He was sectioned under sec 2, this was for 4 weeks. He was then sectioned under Section 3 then section 17. This has given him an accurate assessment for his care needs @ a new home. He is so much better in himself, as his medication has been sorted out. He will be there for a little while longer, we will now be able to look for a new care home for him. This will be funded for him because of what's happened to him.
My sister & myself now feel happier for him as his needs have now been met which is less stressful for all.
Xxx:)

oh Boo how stressful for you but so pleased it has worked out after all that trauma. Hopefully your Dad will be settled and back to his old peaceful self - it would bring a smile to his face if he understood the funding xx
