Aricept

Hello

This is the first time I've every been on the site so hear goes...

My Mum has recently been officially diagnosed and is taking Aricept.
I know she's supposed to take it before she goes to bed but this is proving difficult.
Does anyone know if it's OK to take with her eveing meal at 5-6pmish?
Any answers gratefully received!

what time is bed time?
The subject has been discussed as Bruce says but my wife has been on Aricept first 5MG then 10 MG for 7 years.
She takes them during the evening and no adverse effects.

My Mum usually goes to bed about 9-10pm. So she'd be taking the tablets about 4 hours before she goes to sleep. Although she sometimes forgets to go to bed without prompting as gets morning and night.

Dear Codie

Mum took aricept for two years and always at about 6.00 after her evening meal. She was also always in bed about 9.00. And it worked for her.

Dear Codie,

My father takes Aricept 10mg every morning after breakfast. The tabs were originally prescribed at night but Dad didn't seem to be getting much benefit from them. After a chat with the Doctor we switched to mornings and they seem to have quite a bit more of an effect at this time of the day for some reason.

My hubby was prescribed aricept to be taken after eating to lessen the likelihood of side effects like it upsetting his stomach. The specialist recommended after lunch but I wasn't keen as I wouldn't always be there so specialist changed it to after tea. There was never any mention of it having to have anything to do with sleep or time of day or anything. Does anyone know anything more about it? Also has anyone any knowledge of memantine?

My husband takes his when we go to bed - no matter what the time is. I wonder if it really depends on the individual? He has never had any side effects and they really do seem to have made a difference.

Dear Izzy,

It may be that it's just a question of finding out what medication time suits every single individual. My father now takes his Aricept just after breakfast. He has a huge appetite and his digestive system works and sounds like a plumber's worst nightmare. We never have to wonder if he is hungry, as his stomach gurgles and groans at an incredible decibel level.

The Doctor thought that it would be best for Dad to take Aricept in the morning when it would be best released into his very active system. Others may find it easier to absorb during sleeping hours.

I don't really know - perhaps it's just trial and error for a while here.

Whilst the NICE site is very useful for information bear in mind the information given for Aricept is 3 years old,also a cut off time is not given as all individuals differ.
Consultants work on the guide lines issued coupled with observations of the individual patient

Hello Norman,

I understand that the NICE site for Aricept is dated January 2001, it was due to be reviewed in December 2003, but so far I have not been able to find any updates. My mother in laws consultant told my husband when her mmse score gets to 12 he has to follow government guidelines, he gave her score last week as 12 - 14.
