So after not really understanding a diagnosis of MCI things have accelerated quickly recently. My hub (52) is likely going to get dementia diagnosis. Consultant has said its likely diagnosis and given us dementia information pack for local area. Waiting to hear OT assessment and been referred for specialist scan, with dye,and neuropsychologist appointment.
Everything seems to start post diagnosis but I (42) need advice now. Been responsible for everything for while anyway children, finances, home etc but now realise work going forward won’t be option for husband need to get organised.
To keep him safe and as independent as possible I need to tell people but feel bad with no diagnosis. Same with children (8,12) think when they know it’ll be easier than not knowing but don’t want to say until finalised.
I feel like everything is pending and I can’t plan...I need to plan.
Wish us luck/prayers.

Thanks A

This is heartbreaking for you and your family @Annier68

You do need to plan but as you know it will be difficult without a diagnosis.

You could begin by researching what your position will be and what help you will be able to get. Please ask for whatever help and support you will be entitled to. These things take time and the sooner you get your name known, the better.

There is quite a lot of information about MCI if you haven`t searched previously

I`m sure you will get a lot of support from this forum

Thanks. I don’t feel like MCI was explained very well...very short letter no discussion or follow up. Certainly no link given to dementia and possible supports. We’re past that now and getting very good support from mental health team which is great. Nurse in touch twice weekly and feeding back to consultant who is tweaking medication.
Any advice on POA in Scotland? Seems complicated and expensive.

Can't advise on PoA in Scotland (but others will!) but you definitely need it!

I'm pleased to hear you are getting some support. I hope you can also get some advice for your children - is there a school counsellor? It probably won't be an issue immediately but the children are old enough to understand some things but won't have a clue about the wider implications. Their father's dementia will impact massively on their lives, so be prepared for difficulties. It's hard for grown-ups to watch the progress of dementia, never mind children!
