Hi all,

I am in Canada and there has been several coverage of 6 homes in Calgary and 1 in Peel/Ontario nursing home adopting the Butterfly movement from the company Dementia Care Matters headed by David Sheard.

Considering it was started in UK 20 years ago, I am interested in the long term results of the Butterfly movement in the UK.. Any feedback would be useful.

Thanks,
Mary

Hi Mary

There's a report here: http://www.dementiacarematters.com/pdf/modern.pdf I went to a conference once with a guy there who was talking about the importance of activities in care homes. He got us to do an exercise where we had to write down things we do to feel calm: a place we go to, a thing we have, and a person who makes us feel calm. He then explained in the Butterfly homes they try to have these things available e.g. if someone's place is the beach, could they have a book about the beach or some shells out. He was emphasising the point that things are left out, like in your own houses, for people to interact with so they don't have to ask one of the care staff to get something out for them or wait until the activities start because we don't do that in our own homes, we just go get the things.

The core of the Butterfly Model is around being person centred and I try to promote a lot of these principles in my job supporting care homes with dementia because it does go a long way.

@emp, thanks for the link and I read a few things on butterfly Movement and it seems interesting person centric care.

The homes in Canada that went on it is only 18 months or less so was wondering if people know of other in UK or elsewhere that has been working with it longer on sustainability, long term quality, etc.
