What I did

Well, rather than going directly to the Friends & Contact screen on my User CP (which kept booting me off and giving error messages and accepting requests there I found I could click on the message thread user name go to the friend user profile and on the list it says "bemyfriend" clicked on that and it said you and whoever are now friends...period easy peasy!!
