Hi everyone, my Dad is supposed to be moving into his new home today and I have worries, you may recall that Mum & I were delighted to have found a lovely home for him, unfortunately due to a health problem Dad was not able to move straight away and lost the room. The owner of the home told us he was opening another home and that Dad could have a bed there, we visited amd whilst everything was being updated at the time and there was alot of workmen on site we were happy that he would be under the care of the owner that we liked so much. However when we visited last night to take photos etc for his room we got a very different impression, the nurse in charge was a general state registered nurse I thought that they had to be specialist nurses on duty at all times does anyone know please? Also the keycode for the door lock was printed and placed next to the lock!!! My Dad may be ill but he is not stupid and the home is situated on a very busy main road.

Finally one of the residents asked a nurse if she could go home, not unusual I know but he said to her yes of course you can if you can tell me your address I found this to be very cruel the lady was distressed .

Please let me have your thoughts, my Dad is due to move in today I have been awake all night.

Dear Carol,

It doesn`t sound good.

They Key Code on the door is ridiculous, assuming no resident is able to read. And teasing a resident is totally inappropriate and that member of staff needs his cards pronto.

I would postpone any thoughts of leaving your father there, for today at least, until you get some answers.

Sorry, I know how disruptive it will be for you and your mother but you don`t want that kind of `care`.

Please let us know what happens.

Love xx

Dear Carol, so sorry that you are having this added worry. The code printed next to the lock, heaven forbid! Where has common sense gone?. No wonder you didn't sleep. The care home mum is in displays a sign asking that the code isn't given to residents or they see you key the code in. Also, it isn't to be given to children.

Finally one of the residents asked a nurse if she could go home, not unusual I know but he said to her yes of course you can if you can tell me your address I found this to be very cruel the lady was distressed .
Looks like the compassion went out the door with the common sense. I can't help with your question on the nursing side, I am sure someone else will be able to help you with that question. I do hope that everything gets sorted. Take Care. Taffy.

Thanks all for your replies, I felt like I was overreacting but I wasnt have spoken to the owner of the home
a) Very sorry about the keycode and has removed it
b) They have employed a new nurse specialist trained who will look after Dad on a one to one basis
c) I have not commented on the comments made to the resident last night I will watch what happens

Dad has already gone to the home before we could do anything about it my Mum is there now and says that Dad was tearfull when he first arrived but has met his nurse and made a friend and is talking to him he hasnt spoken much for the last 2 weeks. I am stuck at work going steadily nuts cant get to the home till 4.30 this evening.

Carol, you`ve done well.

When I read Nada`s balanced response to your post, I felt a bit guilty that my response might not have been well considered, and I apologize if I added to your stress.

But you have shown that by identifying your concerns to the home, action can be taken and errors can be corrected.

I can imagine how much you want to get to the home to see your father, but you will, and at least your mother is with him.

It doesn`t sound too bad so far, he has made a friend and is talking to him. That`s a good sign.

Let us know how you find him after your visit. It is a very traumatic experience for you and your mother, but the first big hurdle has been overcome.

Take care

Love xx

Hi Silvia

Please do not apologies for your reply I was glad that you reacted just as I had done and that spured me on the question them sometimes I feel that I am overreacting and working against my Dads best interests it a balance being concerned and showing it to the home and being a nuisance which could affect him. I will keep you all informed if thats ok its nice to just be able to talk sumtimes because I have to be carefull not to cause my Mum any more worry than she already has.

Thanks again for your support
