Advice please

My Mum is at the moderate stage of early onset Alzheimer's disease and my dad left her about 4 years ago, they are still legally married at the moment but my Dad has mentioned about getting a divorce, does anyone know legally if Mum could even understand this as she would forget in a minute that she has signed the papers? Any advice would be appreciated thank you xxx
