    Hi,
My gran is 90 soon and we are taking her out for a family lunch.
I am after ideas of what to do afterwards as it is becoming hard work to find something something to do which is not watching her do ironing, which she loves.
    Thanks

Happy birthday to your Gran. You know her best but at 90 going out for a meal with the family might be tiring for her, or unsettling if it is a change from her usual routine, so don't feel that you have to find something else to do afterwards. It's your Gran's day so let her do what she enjoys and if she loves ironing then why not? :)

It's really difficult for us to say because we don't know what she likes, or is capable of doing. My mother likes music and singing so that would be her idea of a good time. But after socialising during lunch your mother might be too tired to do anything else. Think of what she still enjoys, and if that's ironing, let her do it - it's her birthday, not the rest of the family's.

My mum would have hated going out to eat... too confusing, noisy, complicated but right up until she died she absolutely loved going out in the car. I think the enclosed space in the car made her feel safe but the glass meant she could see a lot.

One xmas evening I had to drop my son at the station and parked next to it facing the platforms. I left my mum in the car for 10 minutes. When I came back she didn't want to leave. She was enjoying the lights, the movements, the action but from the security of the car. Perception changes dramatically with dementia.

    Thanks.
She enjoys family meals out and going for a drive.
Thank you for your reminders of keeping it about her
