Hi
Im looking for suggestions /help .
I have imported a 2 Seat mobility scooter the style is like an electric golf Trolley only it has more gadjitts it is smaller than a Golf Trolley and more comfortable.
It has Seat Belt and a safety arm preventing my wife from getting of to easy.
My advice given was after the import inform the custums within 14 days the reply come no charges for import but they see it as a Class 3 vehicle. So I informed the D.V.L.A .
I now have a Registeration Number plate for it.
My Problem is no body wants to insure it and i am told I can not just have a P-L cover for it .
I felt I could look at my home P.L insurance on my policy.but they have declined my request .
My wife is not able to understand left from right and she has limited walking ability as she looses control of her leg mussels .
So I need help

Hi Dicki and welcome,

I am not sure if you aware but Class3 vehicles do not need insurance to be legal on the roads but it is obviously highly recommended. However one thing you should bear in mind is that only disabled people are allowed to drive a Class3.

Any chance you could give the make and model number of the vehicle as it would be easier to look up.

:)

There seem to be quite a few if you google it, you could look for insurers who specialise in road legal quad bikes. As has been said I can't see you legally have to have insurance I've put a link to the UK.GOV website, section 7 clearly say so, it also give the other rules about where and how the vehicle can be used.

Welcome to TP. It might be worth a call to Adrian Flux - they do unusual car insurance type policies

tricycle

I know this doesn't help as such. but I came up against this problem with my wife and I.

and what I found may help others.

I googled and googled for months looking to sort this problem and I found an electric tricycle with a back seat, it has
rails around back seat so she cant fall off/out now the clever bit for me, it has pedals therefore is classed as a bicycle, same rules and regulations the wife sits on the back quite happy i sit on the front do the driving and off we go to town shopping lol we are quite well known around town now even got stopped so someone could take our photo and send it off to relatives or some such.so a push bike for two was our answer even the police kinda keep a friendly eye on us

If you do an image search on Google you come up with quite a few two seaters, both in-line and tandem.

They appear to all be in the USA, but a few come upon ebay in the UK as second hand.

Earlier in this thread it was stated that in the UK only a disabled person could legally drive a class 3 vehicle on the road.

There are two seater scooters available, but they are expensive; even second-hand. I saw someone driving one a few weeks ago.

Hello Pete
I am glad this thread has been revived
I use a class 3 electric scooter
I have full insurance and breakdown
the scooter is registered with the DVLA and has a licence plate number
I have never seen a scooter with a licence plate and wondered if I am breaking the law in not having it on display
I think the biggest problem for disabled users is the cars parked halfway across the pavement , forcing them to continually drive off the pavement and on to the road
( sometimes a very dangerous manoeuvre )
What then for the scooter rider who is not registered to use the scooter on the highway ?????????

Not just the scooter rider but for all users of the footpath.

A photo emailed to your local PCSO should eventually bring a resolution.

I've just bought one, Jimbo. Shop I bought it from says they've done away with the tax disc now. I'm just waiting for my log book to be sent to me as the new Keeper.

I'm fully comp and will add breakdown next time I get paid. I'm told I'm legal to use it on the road. Bloke knows his business and I trust him.

You must be registered to be legal, far as I know.

Sorry to say but I have been trying as I am disabled and my wife has dementia BUT

Hello Sonny

Unfortunately, mobility scooters for two are illegal in the UK. The closest you could get is a custom-built quadricycle, which would then have to to be MOT’d, taxed and insured, and you would need a driving licence for it.

Sorry I don’t have better news for you!

All good wishes,

James
