I've just finished the most amazing graphic novel (aka cartoon book) about alzheimer's. It's called Tangles and is by Sarah Leavitt, whose mother had early-onset dementia. It's an amazing book - I cried all the way through it (not sure this is a recommendation actually!) at the situations I recognised with my mum, and the situations that are inevitably soon to come. It's desperately sad but at the same time inspiring (as well as fairly unsparing in its depiction of the conflicts that come from caring for a loved one with dementia). Maybe a good book to help someone who doesn't understand, to understand.
