    Pension Service terms

Having come late into my stepfather's life as carer, I don't know the history of his financial affairs. Today he has received a letter from the Pension Service advising of General Increases in Benefits.

He can't remember what the following terms mean, and I'm not yet at pension age - can anyone please advise?

    Pre 97 additional State Pension
(I know this used to be called SERPS, but why Pre 97)

Post 97 additional State Pension (ditto)

    Graduated Retirement Benefit.

I can't find any info which doesn't just quote the Pensions Service booklet.

Many thanks if you can assist.

Have you looked at the age concern fact sheets about this sort of thing?

I don't know how accurate this is but you could look at this

“A test of a people is how it behaves toward the old. It is easy to love children. Even tyrants and dictators make a point of being fond of children. But the affection and care for the old, the incurable, the helpless are the true gold mines of a culture.”
