    Indigestion on nursing home food!

Hi All, I have never suffered from indigestion much but whenever I join my Mother in eating a meal there, I get terrible heartburn and indigestion. It worries me a little as I wonder what they do to the food - any ideas?

    Vocalisations during sleep/half-sleep

Thanks... Thanks... I'm afraid the Home uses it as a 'disturbance to other residents' issue and want to use that to get her medicated more... the more I write about this Home the more I think it's not the one for my mother - problem is, many homes and doctors seem to run along the same lines...

    Vocalisations during sleep/half-sleep

Suitable room Thanks Rageddy Anne - she already has a suitable room for this - plenty of space between rooms and hard of hearing people on both sides! However, the nursing home sees fit to move her to a much smaller room which would disturb others far easier - bizarre!

    Vocalisations during sleep/half-sleep

Hi everyone, Mother has been doing a lot better in the last month - it may be that the increased dose of Mirtazapine has finally kicked in, the regular Paracetamol she is now receiving or, more recently, a small dose of pregabalin. The only problem is, she is still battling with calling out...

Urgent question! Upstairs or downstairs in nursing home?

Result Thanks for replying.... The result is that she's stayed downstairs. When a large decision/crisis comes up, she often becomes amazingly lucid and logical - it's bizarre. She came up with many reasons why moving upstairs wouldn't be such a good idea at this stage. Although myself...

Urgent question! Upstairs or downstairs in nursing home?

Hi all, Mother, as you may know, suffers from bad anxiety. It appears to have improved a little in the last couple of weeks. But a room has become available upstairs in the higher care area - it's about a third the size of her current room and has no fridge or tea making stuff. Many people...

Very frequent whimpering/crying - unable to be alone

Hi there - since Mother's anxiety has increased she doesn't want to be alone at all and has no ability to entertain herself, nor the desire. She is often crying when she calls me and cries frequently throughout the day and night - but not real tears, interestingly - often just the sounds of...

Does restlessness/sleeplessness with antipsychotics get less?

Restlessness/akathesia and Benedryl Hi Toddleo, Many thanks for sharing your experiences - although they sound pretty dreadful. Wouldn't you think they could find something else/some other combination/lower the dosage to reduce this distressing symptom. Wondering if anyone here has...

    The funny side of dementia

Toy collie dog Mother is not advanced enough to be fooled into looking after a lifelike doll... but my brother took in a very realistic collie soft toy - life size! Mother took to it straight away, patting it and talking to it and said ‘he wags his tail!’. Later she said ‘well as long as I...

Does restlessness/sleeplessness with antipsychotics get less?

Hi all, Mother had a bad reaction to Olanzapine/Zyprexa - couldn't stop moving and getting up all night - when she finally had a few hours sleep her legs were still moving in her sleep. We stopped it. Then by chance I was staying there overnight and the CH gave it to her by accident. I...

First night on Olanzapine - akinesia

I went and saw an after hours doctor..... Thanks for your concern! I went and saw an after hours doctor and he said usually this symptom only gets worse so to take her off that anti-psychotic. Had to contact the acting head of the home who came in after hours and talked with me at length...

First night on Olanzapine - akinesia

No medication? Hi Tin, Good to hear from you - have you taken your mum off all medication? The Memantine? Is that to find out what the baseline is? Did you decide to to do that or did the doctors? I would like to try this with my mother - see how she is without any psychotropic...

First night on Olanzapine - akinesia

Note - that should be 'Akathisia' in the title! Akinesia completely different..... Mother had her Mirtazapine increased from 15 mg to 30 mg three weeks ago. It has made her agitation and sleeplessness worse. So she was started on Olanzapine 2.5 mg last night. I stayed the night in the...

Doctor gone to last resort - anti-psychotics

Mother's issues Mother's main issues are very high anxiety levels, hyperventilation, wanting company and reassurance 24/7, disturbed sleep, feelings of shivering/pain/other sensations in her back, feeling cold most of the time...... really horrid for her and distressing for others to see her...

    'Clown mask'

I went to a course today run by a woman who has 30 years experience working with people with dementia and who charges $125 for a one hour consultation. She says it's better not to go and visit the person if you are feeling anxious/down, to have your 'clown face' on all the time you are with...

    It's the 'medication'

I'm in a similar situation Hi Marnie, It struck a chord with me when you said you were less stressed when she had the agitation at home than now when she is being sedated. I'm in a similar situation - just yesterday her doctor had contact with the Home (any time the doctor has contact with...

Doctor gone to last resort - anti-psychotics

Hi all - The increased Mirtazapine has brought Mother to the same point she was at last time it was increased - worsened anxiety and sleep, strange sensations including pain in her back, night sweats - no-one else apart from me seems to see that these are probably side effects. But the doctor...

Thank you Thank you to everyone who replied to my sad message - I will make an appt with Alzheimers Australia tomorrow and see a counsellor - they are very good. For some reason I seem to think I should be able to cope with it all so easily and it comes as a shock when I can't. It surprises...

Suicide Does anyone ever feel driven to suicide because they feel they are too responsible for the welfare of someone else and they just can't do it? You can't go on seeing them suffer, you can't stay resilient and cheerful as you're supposed to, you feel abandoned by extended family who have...
