How do you go about persuading mum that she can't go home. She is in hospital and is looking forward to going home. We haven't told her that she can't go home and we are planning a care home for her. She will not be happy at all, but how do we go about it. It is very difficult.

You could try saying that it's for a convalescence period on doctors' advice, other TPers have found that works.
We told MIL that she needed to regain her strength and improve mobility so she would need convalescence for a while and she settled in quite fast. I think it depends on why your mum can't go home. Good luck
We told mum that urgent works were identified to our home and that we needed to move out a for few weeks until it was done
It is a web of lies we are telling, but as my mum believes she is ok - this was the only way we could get her to a care home without major upset.
You know your mum best and what she may or may not believe. You may not want to lie to her at all - for us it was a really hard thing to decide to do.
