My husband has had dementia now for a few years and been using Exelon patches for the past two years as he was extremely agitated and kept going downstairs and trying to go out during the night. However, the agitation has returned for the past few months and starts with Sundowning often as early as 3.00pm and can go on all evening until he goes to bed with a sleeping tablet. The dementia nurse visited last week for his annual review and when I told her about it she said another medication might help (Mematine, I think is what she said),l when I asked if he could have it she said she would have to talk to the doctor to see if he was eligible? Well today she has phoned me to say the Consultant said it could be the Exelon patch causing the agitation - stop it for 2 weeks to see if it improved, if he quickly deteriorated start using it again and phone her. Do you think this is the best advice, surely if it was given to stop agitation failing to use it will revert immediately back unless he has moved on to a different level
