Hi all - in my vain amount of research and clutching at straws to do anything to get my dad back, I've read numerous things on the benefits of coconut oil in the treatment of Altzeimers.

Does anyone on here know if this is recommended or tried it with any success? Is it only for early stages or can it be tried at any time?? My dad is now at late moderate stage.

My partner thinks I may be clutching at straws - but quite frankly right now I'd clutch at anything to get my dad back?

My mum HATES coconut as it reminds her of her mother and makes her sad!!! so I cook with it but 3 tbs a day is good!!

I have been giving CO to my mum for a while, as the others have said there are 2 or 3 threads on the subject.

Living in Spain

Its now about 4 months since my O.H. has been having virgin coconut oil. There is a definite inprovement in his short term memory loss. He is happier than he was, he is still mislaying and losing things but overall there is an improvement. He has 2 dessert spoons a day. I did order it from U.K. but I have now found Outlet salud in Spain and its delivered to the door. No harm in trying it. Its worked for us up to now.

Hi,
I've read about this and got my mum to start giving it to my dad although I fear it's too late. I've also started taking it myself just in case cos my dad was early onset Alzheimer's at 55yrs old.
They sell jars of it in tescos with normal olive oils etc for around £6.
I hate the taste but will try anything x

Thanks Tiggs.
I'm not sure it is helping but at least we're trying.

I'm glad the coconut oil is working for you!
It didn't for us. But my OH now takes Souvenaid. I can't tell if it works but he loves it and we can always hope!

Mum has been taking both flavours of Souvenaid since the day the company released it, I just wish it was available on prescription as £168 is a lot to pay for 2 boxes but if it helps mum i'll gladly pay it, and yes it does seem to help her.

Hi We also live in Spain, I can get Coconut Oil in the local health food shop but my Husband does not like the taste.

What help have you found here in Spain? as we are rather winging it alone at the moment. he also has PD.

We are quite happy here but I do wonder what to arrange for him in the event that I die before him as I do not think he can ever live alone now.

Hi, Yes, we have heard of coconut oil being a remedy for the big A. just last month.
What I have decided do do is buy some organic coconut oil, solid at room temperature, unless you live in the tropics! I swallow a teaspoon myself in the morning, and also add it to most meals - to cook scrambled eggs, added to frying, added to soups, deserts, anything really....the taste is not strong and is masked by the foods mostly. Don't say you have begun to add it.
It will take months to know if it helps....I am happy if it delays the onset or worsening.
Vits C, B6, B12, folic acid, whatever is recommended in the diet, i find a fresh food containing it, or supplement both our diets. I am 67, my marbles intact at present; my husband 77 with gradually worsening dementia.
Good luck. I hope you can find it in a health food store along with the other supplements, but fresh is best!

Try adding more nuts to the meals you both eat if he doesn't like coconut oil. It's probably time to do what is recommended without consulting him, hide the coconut oil in the cooking - just as good. Olive oil for cooking is better than any other plant oils. Butter has also got the thumbs up again. Perhaps consult a dietician to get some good food ideas your husband would follow from a specialist.
Good luck.
We are all together in this...live for today's small joys, but ask around about arrangements you think you would like to make ahead...the clubs and social expats will have some knowledgeable people who have been there before you and who can advise you. It is good to feel you are not alone. take care. Lilian.

Sending you this information which you may have missed which I have posted before. I am in a similar situation with my husband. We went to see our Spanish Doctor fortunately he was away and a young locum was there. I expained about my husbands memory loss and confusion he prescribed Somazina (Citicoline) its a drink. He has been on this for 4 months plus he takes 2 Spoons of coconut oil. Can't tell you how pleased we are so much improvement all round. Don't think my spanish Dr. would have prescribed it originally but he has now continued to prescribe which is great as it is expensive. Hope this helps. I also worry about if anything happens to me first, trying now to live day to day and not to dwell on the future. Best Wishes Acacia.
