Hi

Just wanted to say I was pleasantly surprised by my Dads care home and their Christmas arrangements.

They have a party Christmas week, to which relatives are invited, with two singers (there are four different units) and also refreshments and food available You can choose a singer or go to both. We will have to find the quiet one because Dad will say its a "bloody row" :D

They are also having an "open" Christmas day and you can have dinner for a fiver! :)

I thought it was a lovely idea for people who perhaps have a husband/wife in the home and want to be with them.

Not sure it would go down to well in my own house, although my partner is working Christmas day (nurse) the three lads living here, 15, 20 and 22 would think the world had ended if Mom done a runner for the day and left them to fend for themselves :D

I may go and have a small dinner and a big one on the evening! although Dad is so bloomin grumpy and miserable there at the moment I would need a large vat of Irish type whiskey liqueur :D to keep me going and of course, I cant drink and drive. Ho Hum :)

Our CH makes quite an effort - always has a Christmas party in the fortnight before - quite a jolly affair and I nearly always go though my mother often doesn't want to be bothered. They usually have some live music/singers and she hates noise.

They do go a bundle on a lot of v nice decorations, and a proper Chr. dinner (lunch) on the day, with crackers and all the rest. I guess relatives can go if they book, same as any other main meal, but although we invariably go on Chr Day morning we've never eaten with them, since my mother has never been aware that it's Christmas and isn't really interested even when you tell her - past registering anything much any more.

It's a specialist dementia home so most of the residents are much the same, i.e. unaware, though I'm sure some of them enjoy the effort staff make more than my mother does.
Also, we always have our own Chr. dinner late-ish, around 5 (less of a rush) and I could never manage to eat two!

Oh boy I love this thread...

We have Brownies coming in to sing, a Brass band, a harpist, some young instrumentalists, a memorial service, a carol service, a ukele orchestra, a playgroup performing songs, and a singer. Plus the actual Christmas holiday itself!
Plus we are hoping to take a few folks out shopping. I'm working Christmas day, Boxing Day and new Year's Day which will be a first for me, but my partner has a young child and I felt it was only right to let her enjoy the magic of Christmas with home while he is still young.
I'm going to be utterly worn out, and I'm desperate to make sure January is not too much of a let down after so have a few things in the pipeline for then too.
It all kicks off this Thursday!!!
