Top ups

My close relative is in a care home and I have been faced by the owners of the home requesting a third party top up as the local social services are reducing their fees for 2012/2013. The owners claim they cannot sustain the level of care they currently provide at yesterdays prices. I would like to challenge this statement, in how therefore can some local care home owners provide care with no top up charges? Maybe the question of efficiency comes into the equation here? There is much talk in respect to the elderly about abuse and human rights. Similarly Quality Care Commission advocate strong statements regarding statement of purposes, meeting clients needs and duties of care. If care home owners are to expect third party top ups or else, then this is gross infringement of the human rights of that third party and more so infringement of the human rights of and duty of care of respective bodies to clients like my relative, who has been in the totally welcomed unquestioned privately funded position in the past, but are now in a position of potentially being faced with the disruption of moving to a cheaper care home irrespective of needs, based on the ability to pay. Has anyone been involved in a similar situation.

Hi Ella
I've not been involved in anything like this, but I was thinking about those people who can't offer a top up - what happens then? Do they have to move, so the care home only has residents that can top up?

The Care Homes get their fee one way or the other, so they hike up the fees of the self-funders to cover any shortfall.

Hello Ella Welcome to tp

third party top ups are definately NOT for this purpose and should not be used this way, they are for things like when you request a better room better facilities etc

I think you need to report this, start with the social worker if you have one
then oerhaps the, think its called cqc (care quality commission)though i;ve no idea how helpful they will be
