Bolton are not the only LA to have fallen for this contract!
John.

Too true, Beechy John, sadly only too true. (How many would you like me to name???)

£billions have been paid out to this same 'caring care provider', because of carefully engineered contracts, some of them created to last for 25 years.

Not a lot of people know that whenever a contract is cancelled, even for very good reasons, the payouts are enormous, much to the delight of the care provider, while the costs to the local public purse are devastating. And that also applies where the 'contracted service' fell below acceptable standards when it was delivered to the people in need of care.

Hi Tina

I'm thinking of you right now. What a difficult situation to say the least! Do keep your strength up and try and have a bit of a rest as you sound exhausted. May be then you will be able to think more clearly and you have my very best wishes x x

I'll be keeping my eye on this one JPG.

JPG's post is about the same health authority who will not fund a cancer support group. The Health Authority states that there is support provided whilst treatment is being given. and that is sufficient. I've sent all the details of the things I've just done to a lady who has been involved in cancer care support for some years as she is in the middle of her campaign to get this off the ground.

Tina,

This is to be your time of relaxation, according to Tinker Face, so you can sit back and read about the Power of a Campaign - all over the country:

http://www.holdthefrontpage.co.uk/2010/news/care-home-saved-after-newspaper-campaign/

and a possible future destiny for Councillors who do not do what their local people want them to do:

Sit back and enjoy, Tina, knowing that you've done everything you could be asked to do on behalf of those who can't do it themselves.

You have spurred me back into action JPG. Here is a copy of the letter I've just sent to my local newspaper. Well done you for getting me out of my apathy and back into gear!

At the end of this month the Council’s Executive Committee is moving towards their decision on the future of the last two specialist dementia, residential homes run by the council . I would urge them to decide on the option which best serves the needs of local people.

The government is pushing us ever nearer to the whole of adult care being provided by the private sector and the Council is also hurrying us all along this road. If these two homes are not to be kept as good, long term, quality care for local people, where would the residents go who have been refused care by the private sector because of their complex needs?

Would such dementia sufferers with demanding, challenging needs be left on the wards of the Mental Health Hospital for the rest of their lives? Many such sufferers whose relatives have been told their needs cannot be met by the private sector are now residing in these two homes and being cared for in a ‘homely’ setting with well qualified and caring staff. This is surely more humane than leaving them forever on a hospital ward!

If these two homes were to close, this would save the Council the money associated with maintaining quality, well trained staff as well as the maintenance of the two buildings and putting the financing fairly and squarely onto the Health Authority’s budged. Problem solved for the Council but not for local people.

May I suggest a viable, simple alternative for the Council is to to market the homes properly as a good choice for specialist residential care? For the past year or so there seems to have been a deliberate policy of not promoting the two homes. Give these two care homes a level playing field to play on Councillors and I’m sure you will find that people will be only too happy to place their relatives needing good quality dementia care in them.

If the Executive Committee vote to continue the running down of these homes, people will be left with ‘Hobson’s Choice’ and as we all know, that is no choice at all!

I have erased specific names to comply with the terms and conditions of the site. Hope I haven't inadvertently missed any.

NOW WILL YOU PLEASE PUT YOUR FEET UP? Yes, I'm shouting! ;)

Switch off the blinking computer and read a good book! Or something.

Otherwise, the wrath of Tinker Face will descend upon you, and you wouldn't want that, would you!

That made me laugh out loud Jimbo. I remember a young man from long, long ago saying to me 'I wouldn't dare try anything on with you'.

I took that remark as a compliment Jimbo as I do yours.

The wrath of Tinker Face is in its ascendency!

Well done you for getting me out of my apathy and back into gear!

Oh dear, Tina. Someone needs to sit you down and explain the difference between apathy and having a rest!

Now, I’ll share my thoughts on TP in case it prompts someone else to come up with ideas.

Just my very humble opinion, I don’t think the Council will close the homes (or not just yet). I think they will continue to exist but under some multi-functional basis and/or under different ownership. That’s why the council could give promises (and let’s face it with how many witnesses and how much press coverage now they surely wouldn’t dare go back on those promises, besides all the cages you have rattled?) that existing residents would have the right to live out their lives there. Even if they ‘sold’ their financial interest in the properties and outsourced care provision, this could be done with a ‘caveat’. I noticed also how the Councillor said there was nothing they could do about the staff. That had alarm bells ringing for me there were either new contracts and/or new ownership in the offing, if not further 'running down' and redundancies.

Did you notice how the Lead Councillor muttered about the provision of intermediate care in the borough? (Check out your post # 42 on this thread – you had already second guessed that possibility yourself ages back).

Now, as it was folly to suggest you rested :p , perhaps you would like to tie yourself up in knots worrying about all the possible outcomes of this review (yes, it is still all guesswork at the minute). Concern is, between the outcome becoming known and the Full Council meeting is a pretty short ‘window’. No point you having a wonderful speech prepared to protest against closure if they throw a spanner in and come up with some other ludicrous plan no-one has foreseen which is wholly unacceptable – or might be acceptable but pressure then needed to force skilful management of any changes?

We could then (that’s me, you, local supporters and TPers) go through each scenario systematically and prepare for objections/concerns etc. Would it make you feel better to feel you are still DOING something to cover every eventuality we can all think of? This is a Godforsaken time just sitting back and waiting, isn’t it? Even if 90% of it proves to be a waste of time perhaps it will feed your masochistic streak?:D

You know where I am – for the serious, torturing with over-analysis  and hopefully a bit of R&R.

Love, Kaz, x

PS: Of course, one outcome is that the homes remain open, continue as they are for purely long-term, specialist residential care and investment is made to illustrate a commitment to their future – in which case there is nothing to worry about (in terms of the homes, not Ken of course) except planning the victory party!:)

You call that wrath?:p

OK, gone away to think thoughts. Back when thoughts have been thunked.

There's not a chance in hell of Tina putting her feet up and resting, so we might just as well get on with it.

Are all suggestions welcome?

You are all such sweethearts. Now I'm going to feed the cats and get something to eat, then I MIGHT read a book - still not finished Harry Potter & the Philosopher's Stone in Spanish! That will tax me somewhat!
