Mum has now been in a lovely care home almost 2 years. I was really worried at first but she has settled in so well and the staff are wonderfull
My problem now is mum keeps moaning and groaning and when I ask her if she is in pain she says her tummy hurts.
She is always wrigglying and moaning Im sure she is in pain. The staff tell me her bowels have moved and her tummy is soft.
BUT what if its more than wind or constipation. How do I know if she is in unbearable pain through soemthing more sinister?
Her Dementia is preventing her from telling me exactly what is wrong?
What can I do.

Hi

possible that she has a urine infection as abdomen pain can be a symptom.

If she keeps on doing it i would ask for a doctor to check her out, just to be on the safe side.

Hope all is well

Hi watneys,

I agree with echoburning, it would be good to get the GP out ASAP. It may be a difficult process, but a good medic should be able to get some ideas even when a patient can't clearly communicate everything they're feeling.

Take care,

Thanks
Never considered Urine Infection, I know that can make her more confused too.

Will ring for them to call the doctor in the morning

Thanks so much

moaning and groaning

Hi, yes my dad moaned alot too and yes occassionally he had a water infection. We usually managed to soothe him by stroking his head or rubbing his arm when we couldn't find the cause. I think he was communicating some discomfort somewhere, but it was hard to know as you say when they can't tell you. I would try the doctor though to rule out water infection xx

Hi
One of the reasons I travelled (very quickly) to UK on 27th December last year was that my Mum had been complaining of severe stomach pain for weeks. Coupled with that her dramatic weight loss and we all put two and two together and made 5!
She has had a CT scan and various appointments with Dr's but all to no avail.
Alzheimers was diagnosed, however, and since then Mum has still complained about pain in her stomach. It can't be a continual UTI so I am wondering if maybe stomach pain is a symptom of Alzheimers?
Hope your Mum feels better soon

Hi Watneys,

I do hope the GP will be of help. Certainly, I would expect that s/he will check to rule out a urine infection. If, the matter is not resolved you could ask the GP for the assistance of a member of the NHS who is trained in dementia care and pain detection and pain relief. Often these folks are end of life nursing care specialist but not exclusively so.

I agree you should check to see if it's 'real' pain. My Mum complains of pain when she upset. If she is having a good time no mention of any pain.
So we in a catch 22 situation. We know she has a bad back and has painkillers. She seems to focus on a certain area. Back for a long time. Then tummy trouble ,now its her shoulder. No mention of her back which we know she has crumbling of the spine.
It's so hard to know what to do.She is on anti deppressants.
If we try to get her to do anything she shouts 'I'm ill '. We have gone to have all sorts of tests. We even paid for a private consultation when Mum insisted she needed hip replacements.
The consultant said she had better hips than he had. When Mum was told she said 'What does he know'
I just wonder if this is all part of the illness. Mum always dissapointed when told she o.k. by the doctor.I wonder if this is a common problem or not ?

Mum in Pain

Well I rang early this morning and was told she was sitting in the dining room having breakfast and was being very amiable and not complaining at all.
I spoke to the matron who agreed with me that it was very very difficult to get to the bottom of how they are feeling.Sometimes its not a pain their tum but they are just fed up and cant explain.
Must admit I did say' whats the matter mum? do you have a pain? answer yes, asked where is your pain? and she answers in my tummy?
But I feel better that she seems to be brighter today I can only visit when Im off work so thats Wed. Sat. Sun.
So i shall see how she is tommorrow
Thnak you all so much for taking the trouble to reply
