Ours was a very young girl. Probably well-meaning but ignorant. Didn't speak English as a first language. E.g. when my mother said "least said soonest mended" (entirely appropriately in the circumstances) the P didn't know what that meant!

Names

In this area the new names for mental health services and buildings are much more friendly than they used to be .

eg new building where the community health team & outpatients from the mental health hospital are based is called the 'Coast Resource Centre' , family therapy, art therapy , some day care , will all go on there. It is adjacent to housing, park & ride & rail station , well away from hospital but coincidentaly next to a private nursing home. Lots of art work has gone into the fabric of the buiding & people with dementia took part in art workshops to create the designs for these. There is hope out there.

Also the assessment service for people who have memory & other cognitive problems here in SW of England is usually called the Memory Clinic & located in the General Hospital (if Aricept or other drugs needed, then people sometimes get referred to Resource Centre - which specialist mental health service). All this is because it makes it more acceptable to patients. I think if it was me - I'd be happy with that.
I" & i'd have to say elderly mentally infirm - awful - CSC|I knew that and got rid of that name - SEVERAL YEARS AGO - why is it still being used ? I meet a lot of professionals (as a Carers Representative ) - I tell them off if they use it - and explain - as i havve ono here - about care homes with personal care, with nursing care and witih the DE registration. The problem they have is that - 'a care home with personal care only and a dementia registration ' is a mouthful comparied to 'EMI' - we need an abbreviation or short name.

When people asked where my Mum was & what EMI meant - i'd have to say elderly mentally infirm - awful - CSCI knew that and got rid of that name - SEVERAL YEARS AGO - why is it still being used ? I meet a lot of professionals (as a Carers Representative ) - I tell them off if they use it - and explain - as i have on here - about care homes with personal care, with nursing care and witih the DE registration.
