Good Morning

Can anyone direct me to a website to purchase a motion sensor / under carpet buzzer?

In the early hours of this morning - I heard Dad shouting "Hello, hello, hello".

Somehow he had managed to get out of bed and unaided (no walking frame) had got downstairs (in the dark) trailing his catheter night bag behind him like a ball & chain! Sounds funny now - but it was so dangerous. I'm still not sure how he avoided falling down the stairs.

I've heard of a "pressure sensor" which goes under the carpet - but despite searching the internet have yet to find any details. Would be grateful if someone could help.

Kind regards to all

If you get back in touch with the incontinence team I'm sure they will be able to help with where to get pressure pads. They may know of a local outlet. I had one for Ken. Wish I had kept it as I would have posted it to you.

I know what you mean about the comic/tragic scenes this terrible illness throws up.

Getting out of bed type alarm

Hi Tina

Thanks for your swift reply - TP is just so wonderful for getting quick responses when you need them!!!

It's not a continence issue though, I'm looking for some sort of alarm which will alert me if Dad tries to get out of bed in the night. I don't even know the correct name for that sort of device (which is probably why I've had no luck with using a search engine!!!) I've heard it mentioned that you can get a sensor to go under the carpet, which will alert the carer....any ideas?

Kind regards

Gill

Gill,
I don't know where you might be able to buy one, but perhaps you could get a supplier address from a care home - my Dad's place uses them as must many others,to monitor residents entering/leaving rooms, the mats are about the same size as a front door-mat.
Alternatively could you put a small switch on the bedroom door and frame to alert you when the door opens?
John.

Thanks

Thanks to all for the replies. Still can't quite find what we need (and I know it exists out there somewhere) - a mat the size of a bathmat, which has a pressure sensor in it).

I will phone the OT and / or social worker and see if they can point me in the right direction.

Thanks once again - just for being there!!!

I reckon a decent burglar alarm company could rig one up in a trice - but make sure you go to a reputable one - there are some shocking cowboys out there.

Hi,

My mother would get out of bed at night and try to leave the apartment. I looked at different alarms, but as they all make some sort of noise I was afraid they would startle my mother and perhaps make her fall.

In the end the best solution for us was a simple wireless baby monitor in her bedroom. It takes a bit of adjusting to get the sensitivity right, but it works great. If she gets out of bed now, we will hear it on our receiver and we can go and check up on her

Regards
Erik

I know that when eventually SS assisted me in 'mats' for Lionel they had found them through "Aids for the Deaf". I remember the CPN telling me at the time.

Hi
We had one for my mother and couldn't have done without it. We got it by ringing the local alzheimers branch who then passed us on to their OT who brought one round for us. There was only one of these mats in the whole of Suffolk, to borrow, so we were very lucky!
HOpe you get hold of one soon.

Hi

We bought a very simple mat off the internet which was actually marketed as a shop doorbell - the type where as you walk through a shop doorway and step on the doormat a doorbell sound chimes. It's saved Dad from several potential falls and seemed much cheaper than some of the other "disabled living aid" ones I saw on the internet.

Dad sits in a reclining chair during the day. If we're not in the room with him we make sure the footrest of his chair is in the up position and put the mat on the floor underneath. If he tries to get out of his chair on his own he has to put the footrest down and so his feet then come into contact with the mat and the chime sounds. It's loud enough to hear anywhere in the house so I should think you'd hear it at night. You could try putting it by the bed or by your Dad's bedroom door.

There's various ones available - I just googled "pressure mat". Have a look at grandoffers.co.uk

Dad hasn't worked out how everytime he thinks of getting out of the chair one of us miraculaously appears by his side...:D

thanks everyone

Good Morning

Thanks for all the replies & suggestions!

PP - that looks "just the job" and as you said far cheaper than the specialist ones!

Connie - you have an excellent memory! I found this type of product under "aids for the deaf" - though would never have thought of lookingn there!.

We use a baby monitor a lot & have found it very useful, for the rare occasions that we are not in the same room as Dad. My bedroom is right next door to his & we keep both doors open - so usually I hear any sign of activity during the night. However I must have been really tired (there's a surprise!) and in a really deep sleep in the early hours of yesterday morning as didn't hear a thing!

Thank you all so much for your replies.

Take care & kind regards to all

Love

When my Mum was weak & unsafe on her legs & supposed to be confined to bed unless assisted (but she forgot until she got out!) her social worker came up with a sensor mat which went under her mattress & gave an audible warning if she shifted her position significantly (ie tried to get out).

I've tried to find it on the web but, as you said, if you don't know what it's called ... Ah! Try this one though http://www.alimed.com/CategoryBrows...oid=166&fcat=Patient+Safety+&+Fall+Management

An afterthought ...

Before we had the bed alarm thingy, my low-tech. attempt at the problem was to hang some little (ornamental) brass bells off the edge of the duvet, so I could hear them.
Of course, the layout of your bedrooms might not be so convenient as ours was.

Have you got sorted with a buzzer mat? We use them in our nursing home but we are in Northern Ireland. Call into one of the local Nursing homes and aks who supplies them. They are great but I have found at times residents can avoid them so you do not know if they are out of their bed. Another thing that I have heard being used is an orange net specially made to go across the door when it is open and this is suppose to stop residents going any further. I have never used it in my practice.

Hope you get sorted.

Sorted !

Good morning all & thanks for the various & helpful replies.

Ordered the "pressure mat" from www.grandoffers.co.uk as suggested (total cost incl P&P £25.54 - much cheaper than some of the "specialist products" which do exactly the same thing. Placed the order on-line lunchtime on Tuesday & the mat arrived yesterday morning (how about that for service!!!!)

As the plastic sensor mat has to go underneath a rug or mat and I don't want Dad tripping over - am going to see whether we can put it under the bedroom carpet this weekend (when I have my cousin here to help me.)

I'm sure it will be just the job!

Thanks to all

Love & Kind Regards
