Dad has a Uti and suddenly can’t walk, keeps getting out of bed and falling

dad has late stage vascular dementia and is in a care home. He has been stable for quite a while. This week he developed a Uti and suffered a head injury from a fall. In two days he has had 3 further falls while getting out of bed, he seems to be very agitated and when he tries to stand he keels over. He is also developed incontience. The home has placed a sensor mat by his bed but they fail to get to him in time. What can we or they do to keep him safe during this difficult time

Can they lower the bed to the floor or use bed rails? Also, has your Dad had a through check up following the falls to check for any broken bones? Agitation and an inability to weight bear after a fall could be an indication of a fracture. When Mum went to A&E after falls the hospital only seemed to check for 'visible' injuries and they missed a fractured spine. Her severe agitation disappeared when she received effective pain relief. It's worth making sure that your Dad doesn't have other injuries in addition to the head injury, and maybe the home could give him some paracetamol to see if it helps the agitation? It could be the UTI causing the symptoms but in view of the falls it's worth ruling out any injuries.

Sorry to hear that. I know from experience how difficult it can be to find out information in hospital but I hope that you can manage to find a doctor/consultant who will let you know what's happening.

My ho as vascale dei for 4 year up till
January that was slow he was sent in hospital with chest indexation spent 2 weeks in hospital came home with incotent unable to walk and help getting dress and undress He leans to one side a lot and shuffles his feet been told it’s a form of Parkinson’s but can not have pills for it
Where in December know and still same
Been told every time he as illness things can change
