I missed this thread before and It's actually been years since I watched Casualty - but I caught last night's episode quite by chance.

I can't speak for what has gone before, but they seem to be getting to grips with the nitty gritty of what caring for a person with dementia entails - including financially, challenging behaviour - and the impact it has on those who are trying to juggle care alongside full-time employment.

I found it particularly interesting as the character with dementia (Duffy) is still of working age, as is her partner - and that reflects what my situation was.

It also looks like they are going to acknowledge the risk, and often reality, of carer breakdown.

Not easy viewing for many, I know, but I think I am at a stage now where I can follow the storyline going forward without becoming overwhelmed.

Hopefully, it will go some way to informing people about the difficulties involved - and what help is out there.

I found it an excellent development last week and this week, especially being unable to get financial help, being under retirement age and carer breakdown.

I found it a bit unrealistic that all colleagues were able to offer to supervise and support when they are so hard pressed in the workplace. It`s still a soap so will be interesting to see if that support can be sustained.

I think it's presenting the problems and then giving ideal world solutions. We all know how much easier it would have been if others had helped to share the load...that was certainly not my experience with my family.

Maybe it will make some people sit up and think....maybe not..

Same here but at least it was more realistic than EastEnders. Although what medication is Duffy on?

Probably none seeing that she has vascular dementia which can't be directly treated, though probably the behavioural issues could - I'm not an expert.

Some aspects of the episode were good but obviously there should be more help from Social Services if they can't afford private care, and the help from their colleagues, as heartwarming as it is, is totally unrealistic.

I think it's great that they're making Duffy more difficult to live with. But the idea that their colleagues - full time nurses with their own families - have all offered to care for Duffy one day per week indefinitely is completely ridiculous!

Unless of course they intend to show those same helpful colleagues backtracking in a week or two - that would be far more believable.

Didn't take Charlie long to reach carer breakdown though, did it? I'd like to see them being forced into SS funding and getting offered 3 half hour visits a day nstead of the luxury of an all-day carer. This is such a good opportunity to show people how life with dementia really is so I hope they show everything...

I did like his frustrating phone calls to social services...

I used to be a big Casualty fan back in the days of Megan, Duffy and Charlie, but haven't really bothered for years as it has become over dramatised. In the real world staff just don't have the time to stand around talking about life outside of work, let alone help in a big way.

I hope the series does portray how lonely caring can be, I doubt Charlies colleagues will be able to care for Duffy on a continual basis, but I won't be watching as I can't bare how they get some of the medical/nursey bits soo wrong.

Casualty isn't on this week but it will be on over Xmas when Charlie reaches breaking point and Robyn is unable to help him out.

I don't normally watch it but now I'm staying with mum sometimes mum comes across it and we watch it. We saw the episode where duffy forgot she was looking after Charlotte and left the park. Mum kept asking why has she left the girl, then a little later was asking what was wrong with her and why are people upset with her? as mum had forgot what happened earlier.
We also saw last week and early on when it was mentioned duffy had dementia mum said 'thats what I've got int it.' (Mum has alzheimers not vascular dementia but yep). Then she said 'she's not old and she a nurse and knows lots of people so it looks like anyone can get it.' (Mum thinks she has it because she's not socialised or done much recently)
Later on when Duffy had a meltdown shouting at Charlie. Mum said 'oh I hope I dont get like that'. I didn't say anything to mum but she already does get like that, not accusing me of having affair with carer like duffy did, but has been equally loud and accusing about other things quite a few times.
When Charlie was having his meltdown mum said 'oh heck has he got somert wrong with him now? I'm glad I'm not going to that hospital theres somert wrong with em all.'
At the end when Charlie on skype call home mum asked 'who are they and what they there for?' I said 'they other staff he's friends with, they're going to take turns looking after Duffy'. Mum said 'Oh thats good. Why can't I have that. Who looks after me?' 'I do mum.' 'What just you! Thats not fair.'
Not sure if she meant it wasn't fair for her or me.
Don't know if we'll watch again, just depends how flicky mum is with the remote but would be interesting to see how duffy and charlies story goes.

I've been following the Charlie and Duffy story and I do think that it's well done. I hope they take it to the bitter end but suspect they won't.

It's not easy to watch.

I was struck by all the labels/signs they had in Duffy and Charlie's house, to help Duffy understand what everything did.
It reminded me of our daughter bringing in printed labels so my wife (PWD) would know the purpose of each room, i.e. lounge, toilet, kitchen. I went along with it for a few weeks, but in the end, took them all down. This is our home and the last thing my wife needs is a constant reminder that she has memory problems.

I put signs up and it was the carer, my brother and his partner who had trouble finding dad's medicine when I was away. I won't say anything else except that dad was the one with Alzheimers and he probably knew where it was!

Charlie will learn soon enough that those labels in the house won't help as they will be roundly ignored!

Poor Charlie, my heart breaks for him - for them both really. And well-meaning Robyn, asking him to let her know if he needs help. He won't, unless it's really bad. It's not her fault, but hopefully she will realise she might have to be more proactive than that.

I used to leave a notebook that I'd purchased from the Society's shop on the kitchen table each night alongwith dad's medicine. At first he read it but as his dementia progressed it was ignored.

Depends how you define "brilliant". Yet another story cut short.
