my mum has alzheimers, late stage, she stays awake for 48 sometimes 72 hours at a time and talks, well babbles, constantly, sometimes getting very anxious, scared and shouting. I am finding myself getting short with her due to sleep depravation. I know sleeping pills are a no no because of her condition, but could melatonin be a way of getting her sleep back on track as it is the hormone your brain produces to steady ones body clock, and if so how can I get some? through the doctor or maybe from dementia clinic?

My husband took sleeping pills for a while to put his sleeping pattern back on track and it worked. Zopiclone 7.5 mg. No worsening of his dementia occurred.

As an insomniac of several decades history, I have tried every technique, herbal remedy, hypnotherapy, sleeping pill, and melatonin.

A combination of sleeping pills and hypnotherapy have worked reasonably well but the melatonin was useless.
