On top of having mum's 1st respite cancelled my dog has ruptured his cruciate ligament and will have to have specialised surgery to cut his shin bone and reposition it, it will mean at least 8 weeks in a crate only being allowed out to toilet.

It never rains but it pours! I really hope you've got someone who can give you a big cuddle, sounds as if you could do with one right now.

Thanks for all of your kind thoughts, I have now ordered a dog pen and brought his old crate on wheels in from the garage to get him used to it again, I will have to sleep in the sun room with him until he is allowed upstairs so I hope it does not get too cold, it could be 8 weeks, I also hope that mum does not keep walking around downstairs all night.

So sorry to hear about doggy. Keeping an active dog confined for that long sounds hard.

Could you get a second crate upstairs for night time (assuming he doesn't need night time toilet trips) although it might be too much to carry him up and down.

I will speak to the vet and be advised by his opinion but I don't want to risk anything that would affect his recovery, he is only 6 years old.

So sorry to hear about your dog's bad luck. One of my previous dogs managed to rupture both her cruciates (not at the same time) and she too was only allowed out to toilet on a lead. It is important that they don't do anything that will put pressure on the leg, no jumping, going upstairs, getting on furniture. I hope that the 8 weeks pass uneventfully for you and your dog

My dog had these done on both knees within 8 weeks this year (she was 7 at the time) and the result is like having a puppy again, mine was crated for 6 weeks each time but I carried her upstairs and down in between. Dogs are very resiliant and within 2 days of the second knee was jumping around like Bambi (on a restraint!). I know you don't need this on respite care being cancelled, but end result for your dog will be worth it, take the dog to bed with you and put puppy pads down if you need to - they have an innate understanding of what is happening. I am sure it will be worth it and things will get better all round. X

I was thinking of effectively transferring him from downstairs crate to upstairs crate assuming you think you can safely carry him upstairs. We had to keep our dog away from stairs for a bit -- dislocated hip 4 years ago - not confined to a crate and we got a stairgate at top and bottom, but carried her up over night (she has always slept in our room)

Unfortunately although normally the sweetest dog, when he is hurt or stressed he turns into the dog from hell so carrying him upstairs is a not going to be an option, he also weighs 21kg. Taz has always slept in our bedroom too.

If he's not going to let you carry him out of the crate, doesn't sound like an option, ours has always been very docile and trusting.
