If I look at the list of "Members Online Now" the box at the bottom says:

Total: 139 (members: 16, guests: 108, robots: 15)

What are the robots?
Where do they come from?
What are they doing?

Is it things like google search engine trawling the web?

That's exactly what it is

Significantly as robots cannot log on they cannot trawl the Members' Area anything posted there is unavailable on search engines.
