Mini Rant about Company

So I've been trying to order a chair for dad. I finally found one that looks great....but! The company only do kerbside delivery! Which seems crazy. It's a specialist mobility company and they don't even deliver into the property! I can't believe how little they understand the needs of their client base.

I called another company that supply these chairs and to get it delivered into the home would be an extra £120!!! I'm so cross, it feels like taking advantage. I asked the guy on the phone (bless him, he sounded a bit ashamed) how people normally cope and he said that their clients usually have to "hire a labourer" to help them move it.

(I've just realised I started making a cup of tea before I got the call back from the 2nd company and now it's gone cold. Now I'm REALLY annoyed. )

If it's an electric reclining chair, they are VERY heavy, especially the ones with two motors.

If you cant find a supplier who delivers into the property, you could try ringing up your local Age UK to see if they know of any organisations who may be able to help with the delivery? Alternatively, you could search online for local handyman services, men-in-shed groups, local rugby club (big strong boys).

That is poor service, Kay. You might expect £10 maximum to deliver a chair, but £120 is taking the proverbial. Sorry I can't recommend anyone who can do a better job.

That is really poor service, I am not surprised you are cross. If you order something heavy like a washing machine, they send two guys with the delivery so they can deliver it right into the house and they don't charge £120 for it! It is ridiculous for a company selling mobility aids to dump it on the kerb.

We used a company called Ableworld. They delivered & installed Dad's electric recliner for £50. Do they have a branch near you?

@Philbo - I asked them how heavy it was and apparently it's 35kg which, to be honest, doesn't really give me any idea of how manoeuvrable it's going to be so not sure why I asked I'm trying to borrow a trolley (dolly?) from an acquaintance so I'm hoping they can at least offload it on to the dolly and then even if it takes an hour for me to manoeuvere (why is that word so hard to spell!) in the doorways and stuff, well, at least it'll be done.

@nae sporran & @Sirena - SUCH poor service! It's really taking advantage.. You're absolutely right, companies have no bother delivering washing machines and sofas and who knows what else, so why is this so impossible.

@Cat27 - I just looked and sadly not. The closest is about 50 miles away. Thanks for the suggestion though!

35Kg is around 5.5 stone to give you some idea. Not sure on the chair you're getting but the back "reclining" section on my wife's chair was easily detached, making it easier to manoeuvre,

I have found that when the delivery guys turn up, they will often carry the item indoors, when asked nicely. I always give them a "drink" when they've gone out of their way to help.

@Philbo - I might even tell mum to go out and meet them - she's only 5 foot 2 and 70 years old so hopefully that'll encourage them to lend a hand
