@CAD My mother had phases of sleeping 16 hours a day but not as long as this. Is your husband on any medication which causes drowsiness? One thing we tried is we had methylphenidate (Ritalin) prescribed. Although it is known mainly for treating ADHD, it is also used for narcolepsy. It did help my mother. Perhaps that would be a possibility.

My dad went through a stage of sleeping most the day, and all the night, although I don’t live with him so I don’t know how many hours. However he is now awake more but bed bound. I don’t know whether the sleep thing was a phase for him? I too wonder how long the ‘last’ stage can be and worry I won’t get there in time
