Challenging Behaviour Dilemma

Hello there,

My Dad has suddenly developed challenging behaviour. (aggression/climbing out of windows/going out through a fire escape/shouting to passers by I am being kidnapped) They say it is a decline in my Dad's vascular dementia. I think he has realised he is not going home (constantly trying to get home) so he has gone none compliant and when pushed to do things he lashes out in sheer frustration. The current nursing home have prescribed medication to treat his high level of anxiety/depression. They feel he is not suitably placed and I agree now. I am seeking an alternative home and am awaiting a nursing assessment to determine whether he is EMD/EMI. The move is going to be traumatic, thats if I can get him there as he will just think he is going home when he leaves the current care home. What on earth do I do? It is so distressing and upsetting.

Im so sorry to hear about the sudden decline. Hopefully the nursing assessment will bring clarity on where he can move to.
Once you know where he is moving to get the new home involved in his move - you do not have to do it all on your own. Both the old and the new home will have seen it before. It may not be quite so traumatic as you fear, and even if it is, the new home should be better able to settle him.

The important thing to concentrate on now is to find a home that will meet your dads current needs.

Another member on here, @Elle3, went through this (her dad exhibited similar symptoms, and I believe did actually escape from his CH). Elle had help from a very proactive social worker in finding him a new suitable CH, so you could try asking for help from SS. Elle's dad went to a very good placement which met his needs and she was happy with the outcome, hopefully it will work out for your dad too.

Thank you very much for your reply. I have found a home that I am happy with but there are no vacancies at the moment so we are on a waiting list. First on the list for EMD and 4th for EMI. My Dad is having a nursing needs assessment this week. I just hope we can get him into the right home with specialised care as soon as possible.

Thank you for taking the time to reply.

Hi...I'm so sorry ur dealing with this. Some Alzheimer meds make aggression worse. keep up with what meds he is taking. My dad has Alzheimers, he's home with my mom. I've worked closely with his doctors to get him on meds that work. So far, he is under control...outbursts every now and then. I hope everything works out...

Thank you for your replies, I really appreciate it. My Dad has now been assessed as needing an EMI placement. The problem now is that the EMI homes, so far, are not willing to take him because of his high falls risk. So, where do I go from here? Nightmare................

I think you need to push for social worker input. They need to support you in finding a suitable home, though this may be easier said than done. We have had "Best Interests" meetings where health and social work staff get together to try and find the best solution.

Thank you. I have had a call from Best Interests this week. I will ask for a meeting. Thank you very much.
