You can, but it's hardly ever granted. The same assessment though decides about Funded Nursing Care, so it doesn't hurt to request it, but please don't expect too much.
I will keep my expectations low
Thank you for taking the time to reply

Thank you for all your replies
I think that mum will have to remain at my home if the fees are anything like £1000 per week!
I will be bankrupt if I have to pay this
Feel so lost and scared as I can’t look after mum properly but also can’t afford these costs

Dear Lindie,

You shouldn't have to pay unless you agree to a top-up. My dad was in a care home for almost a year at £650 a week. Follow Nitram's advice first. My youngest brother did a print out for me and also I found out what my local authority were prepared to pay towards a care home. This varies from district to district but if you are getting an assessment first they should be advising you on this. Keep us posted so that we can give advice as well.

Hi
I have finally come to the realisation that mum needs to be cared for 24 hours a day and needs to move into a permanent caregiver giving environment
Just wondered if anyone can advise on the costs. Mum has Alzheimer’s dementia and would need specialist care as she has recently been diagnosed as type 2 diabetic
I have tried googling but I can’t seem to get a direct answer
Thanks so much in advance
L
Hi
In my dads residential home with a dementia unit ( he has just recently passed away ) there was a lady who had dementia and was diabetic and district nurse came in to give her the injections dads home was not a nursing home so maybe your mum doesn't need nursing just residential with dementia unit it's worth looking into that.

I have just been through the assessment process as OH moved into a care home on Wednesday. I was panicking when I was told that the fees are £896 per week but once it was all explained it became more realistic. £177 per week will be paid by the Scottish Government as Free Personal Care. OHs State Pension and Small Private Pension will continue to be paid into our joint account adding £254 per week to the budget, so the actual cost will be £465 per week from HIS Savings. Once HIS savings fall below £28,000 (by my reckoning in a year) the LA will start to contribute to the fees.

In addition OH will have £27.75 of 'pocket money' per week for personal expenses, which should cover replacement clothes, barber, etc. Given that I spent approx half the usual on a week's food shopping and am expecting a drop of 50% on the fuel bills now that I will not have 3 loads of washing/drying every day, I should manage fine on what is left.

Hi
You say your father owns the house but your name is on the deeds. If you could explain in more detail, it would be easier to advise you. Do you mean he owned the house and then gave you a half share? If so, when was that? How old are you?
Hi
I am 65 and still working part time. Mine and my dads name are on the deeds

As you're over 60 and a child of the person in care then the house is a "mandatory disregard" and the LA cannot take it into account in a financial assesment. It wouldn't matter if the house was in his name only, partners of any age, children under 16 or over 60 remove the house from counting in a financial assessment.

Watch the barber! My friend's husband was proud of his 'proper' shave, she was horrified at the cost of £17, he never bothered at home. He was quite disinterested in the cost and the diminishing savings. A captive clientele perhaps! Pleased the other finance is better than you expected. X
