Depends on the bank and how much money is in there. I have just gone through the Probate process with my dad's Estate. He only had a couple of bank accounts but as they amounted to over £50K (Lloyds Bank) I had to apply for Probate.
If you do it is very easy to do on line, especially if there is a Will.
