Crossroads rang me late afternoon to say that they have someone for the other slots (to begin end Sept/beg Oct) - he is a man in his 50's:) I think this will be so good for Alan as he gets very little male company. It will certainly be interesting.

On another note, I rang Crossroads yesterday to say that I had to go to a meeting next Wednesday and wondered whether there was anyone that could sit with Alan because it was too long to leave him. They got back to me today (this is quick and reliable) and they have someone and it is all in place:) The service is unbelievably professional, respectful and reliable.

I'm glad the sitters are working out and that now you've managed to get additional support as well.

It's good to read that some services do work for dementia sufferers.

I was beginning to wonder!

Hello Helen.

This is brilliant. :)

The service you are getting should be regarded as a Beacon for the whole of the UK. Please continue to keep us posted on the excellent provision in your area.

At least we will have a record of what could be available.

Love xx

Hi Lanie and Sylvia

I would have never even thought of ringing Crossroads to ask them for anything over and above what I was alloted but the sitter told me to ring them. She was sure that it wouldn't be a problem.

I am going to a carers meeting led by the Alzheimers Society on Friday morning and I am going to broach this subject there. I am a bit nervous though because there will be other people in this area and it might be like opening a can of worms. I might broach it by asking what their experiences are of care.

Good for you Helen

It will be great for Alan to have a male sitter they can talk about male things that we women don't understand,

keep up the good work

Whilst I really am so pleased with the support Helen is getting at the moment through Crossroads etc, I can understand Jan's comment.

I AM JUST GREEN WITH ENVY

Whilst Lionel & I are well past needing that type of care, here in this corner of the South East services are very, very limited.
Certainly evening sitters - well just forget it.

Imagine my dismay today to read in our local paperthat they are closing one of our centres which took Dementia and Alzheimer's sufferers. 13 staff made redundant and the 32 service users will have to be accommodated elsewhere. This in an area of massive ageing population - certainly nothing for under 65 in the borough.

I take my hat off to those enlightened people in your area Helen.
Long may it continue

Same thing is happening here, Connie.

Our local hospital ran a day hospital for dementia sufferers...the PCT has pulled the plug...

The rationale given is that these people can be given a better quality of care in their own homes.

I think this is undoubtedly true for some. People past the early stages are more comfortable with one-to-one attention. But is ant LA going to provide that attention for 6/7 hours a day? I doubt it!

And many people in early stage dementia do benefit from socialisation. What about people who live alone?

It reminds me of the excuses given for care in the community for people with mental health problems, rather than hospital admission. That worked for some people too, but for many,....

Makes my blood boil!

I very much doubt it too, Hazel...!

It angers me that these are so obviously cost-cutting exercises..but they invent excuses to cover it up.

Sorry, Helen..didn't mean to intrude on your thread...

Crossroads sound marvellous...the sooner they spread into neighbouring areas ...the better.....:D

crossroads

i also have found crossroads to be excellent, both with there choice of support worker and a very well run organisation. At the moment i just have1 visit per week, but Colin the support worker came this week and said he had spoken to his boss because he was concerned and felt we needed more help, so he is going to come every other Tues for 3 hours, which will enable me to work without worrying about Trev, I am so gratfull , if you are offered this service grab it with both hands because this help makes all the difference. it is nice to be able to be positive about something connected to Alzhiemers for a change.
