Hi. My husband has been having memory problems for a couple of years now, but they seem to be worsening. He has also started jerking and twitching during the night or if he naps during the day. It is getting much more severe, and it really disrupts our night. Is this jerking/twitching due to AD? My husband has no formal diagnosis as yet, but we are going to the specialist memory clinic next week for a four hour test. My doctor advised me to contact the AS, as she thinks he has dementia. Any advice will be truly welcome. Thank you. :)

Hi Nelliesbaby

When my symptoms began 7 years ago, this was one of them - myoclonic jerks. In an attempt to understand my condition I read that magnesium deficiency may affect this so started having Epsom salt baths which contains magnesium which you can absorb through the skin - I am aware my digestive system doesn't work like it did prior to symptoms so not sure taking supplements would help. The condition causes all my muscles to ache very much and have little strength and the baths have helped with that and the jerks are very infrequent now, well very rare actually.

I hope you find something that helps your husband.
Best wishes
Sue:)

Hi,
My hubby has LBD and after a visit to the memory clinic he was identified with this due to having jerking and jumping movements in the night and on resting .Also he has a slow shuffle walk which also is related to LBD .I hope all goes well for you .xx

MOH has had episodes of the night jerks, at first I used to think it was just part of the AZ, but when I started to wake him up when doing it, I asked what he was dreaming about, and he, being a retired police officer, replied every time that he was having problems making an arrest. Just a thought, maybe not AZ connected at all ?

after losing his sense of smell many years ago, my OH was diagnosed with REM sleep disorder. He would act out violent dreams...he has shouted out, and had conversations with me that he had no recall of once awake, at worst he punched me in the face while I was asleep next to him. It causes him to twitch and jerk mostly. We have had a diagnosis of MCI for some time, the anti anxiety and anti seizure drugs have helped enormously with this. His memory scores are falling though, so may be the beginning of some sort of AZ/D, or even Parkinson's related. Apparently the loss of smell and this sleep disorder have long been known as signs for PD.
I've heard that loss of smell is now thought to be an early indication of AZ too?

Hi. My husband was diagnosed with Alzheimers 5 years ago. He also has had these jerking movements when sleeping at night. It also happens if he nods off in the chair during the day. Sometimes they are very severe. I think this is very common with most cases of Dementia
