It looks like it could be the start of good news, but what Hunt has said is devoid of specifics I’m not hopeful. All he appears to have done is to pay lip service to the fact it is unfair and offer a carrot by way of a future cap. It should have all happened in 2016 but didn’t.

He's not actually saying anything is he?Things will change? No how or when.Likelihood is that this will still be an issue 5 years from now.

How will it actually work? He's saying your last £100,000 will not be touched presumably that includes the value of your property. I, and an awful lot of people I know don't have over £100k in assets if you exclude their property. Currently the last £14k is safe but if you have a qualifying person still living in your property when you go into care then the house is a mandatory disregard.
How will that work with an £100k limit, surely they'd have to get rid of the mandatory disregard or only the rich (i.e. those with over £100k) would end up paying anything.
It looks like we'll have to wait until the specifics are published in the summer to see exactly what the plan is exactly.

Well I know my mum hasn’t got over £100k in other assets other than her house. There is a wider issue here as of course the housing market needs more people to buy houses instead of renting. I’m desperate to stop renting & rents keep going up & you don’t have the security.

£14k won’t be enough of a deposit on a house for anyone.

If people have their inheritance taken away from them because their PWD goes into care & what should have been left to them in terms of a property and other monetary assets gets eaten up by care then that also stagnates the housing market but obviously the government will need to tax something to actually pay this or they will be entering deals with care homes or plan to build specialist dementia places that could be LA run. There is a proposal for one to be built in our city.

I really do hope that there will be some consideration of 'dementia hospitals', specialist places for dementia only, where people can receive 'care' and medical support in one place. I'm not sure how many would be needed to house everyone with such needs - very many I guess! I suppose all the current care home owners would not be too happy with such a plan though, but they could still provide a home for those without dementia, or those with dementia who do not need such intensive support.
