Hello and welcome

Unfortunately it is not only welcome to a care's forum, but also welcome to the world of the Internet.

Spammers [eg porn, drugs, finance, etc] and trolls [badly disturbed people who try to divert the forum to their own agenda] do for their own reasons attempt to post material on all forums.

You have been unlucky in that you have joined at a time when I am banning loads of would-be spammers before they can post their wares.

Unfortunately, as a human spam filter, I do need sleep. :)

When I'm not around, other moderators will move offensive material out of the public area.

This is the record of spammers I have banned the past week - note that today there have been 16 so far and it is only 07:00 hrs.

There are thing that a forum can do to minimise spamming:

1. not to permit registration before we check the identity
2. to amend the registration process

The Alzheimer's Society has chosen to do neither of these because either - or both - might cause problems to a genuine carer wishing to register and needing a reply to an urgent question very quickly.

Spamming [and trolls] is something we have to live with.:(

And to support Brucie, and all the hard work he does...I'd just like to say in the 3 yrs of using this site regularly that is the first one I have ever seen on here...the rest must get caught so quickly that they beat my attendance.
I think he deserves a huge thank-you (as do the other moderators) for keeping this forum as clean as they do.

I also support wholeheartedly the work of Brucie and other Moderators. I have occasionally seen a spam message and have learned to press the 'exclamation mark' (top right hand corner) immediately.

It is distressing for us to see them but if we act quickly we can help the site and ourselves.

I am so sorry you had to meet this on your first visit to the Forum - you can be assured it is an extremely well monitored and valuable site.

Best wishes Jan

Since I'm in Canada, I'm often on when the UK is asleep. I've run into dubious postings a couple of times and also report them as soon as I see them.

It's a shame you saw a spam posting. But this is a very good site and very important to us who come here regularly. It's often the only lifeline a person has.

Sadly these posts are coming thicker and faster just now. I and the other moderators manage to clear a few but Bruce clears the lion`s share.
I`m sure these spammers have extra sensitive antennae which let them know when Bruce is off line.

I know what you mean, They even getting the time now during the day to post photos, I have never seen that before On TP It was disgusting.

I did try to report it, but when I click to report it I got a message saying that I never had administration permission .

How do they get the time to post photos during the day without being notices ?

Virtually all of the spammers use hotmail, googlemail or recently, t-mobile mailer.

Most forums won't allow anyone to register using these mailers for this very reason.

For the same reason that we don't vet registrations, and make the registration process more complex - i.e. to make things easier for the genuine people - we don't stop people using hotmail, etc.

With a constant stream of spammers registering, one or two will always get through, at whatever time of day, in a banning/moving system that relies on people noticing and acting.

I'm not certain why you couldn't report it. I suppose it's possible that you were trying to report it at the very time it was being removed - that can cause strange messages. As to how they get on during the day - actually I think there are, on the whole, less moderators around during the day as for the most part they are doing what everyone is doing - caring. In the evening people have time to get to their computers. I delete a fair amount of stuff that comes up overnight, but I generally go to bed by 11 my time (4 am your time). I can only assume that the reason people do this is because they either get paid by the link the post or by the number of people who click through on the links they post so they post them everywhere. Now some sites require you to be moderated for a period of time before you can post, but the society feels it's is important that people who genuinely need help should be able to post 24/7 without being hindered and because of that we get a certain number of spammers as well.

Cross posted with Bruce, who said what I wanted to say but more succinctly :D

I did try to report it, but when I click to report it I got a message saying that I never had administration permission .

I've had that message a few times too, Maggie. It just means that one of the mods has already moved it to an area that we can't access.

We do seem to be getting a lot just now, but if everypne remembers to click the red triangle, they disappear very quickly.

Thanks, moderators.

Was not stating or Implying that the moderators not not do a good Job. Just wondering why that happen as that thread had not been moved any where when I click it, as I was inside the thread when I reported it .

But Jeniffer explained it above that it must Just being removed.

I`m sure these spammers have extra sensitive antennae which let them know when Bruce is off line

Is it Bruce that can only remove them ? so that why Spammers only attack when Bruce is not on line

No we can all remove them (the offensive threads) but only an administrator (Bruce or Craig to all intents and purposes) can actually ban the offender.

Ahh I never knew about the triangle with the exclamation mark...As I am on Australian time, I'll endeavour to keep an eye out from now on and click on it if I see any 'porn' type messages.

Hi All

thanks for your advice on the porn spam! It was my first posting and just puzzled me? Obviously with the time difference is a problem.

I was just a bit concerned!!!!

Obviously the moderators do a great job! I am not very good at the computer stuff unfortunately!

thanks again.
