My wife Gill has Frontotemporal Dementia and receives Employment Support Allowance due to her age (53) she is in the "support group" for ESA, and as such I thought she was entitled to free NHS dental care, but apparently not, as this type of ESA is not "income related". She has therefore been sent a penalty notice from the NHS of £98.50 plus the dental fee of £19.70 for her last check up as we ticked the wrong box and didn't pay for it at the time!!! Does anyone else have any advice or experience of this?

Try and find out the EXACT wording on the box you ticked, also check wording on any other relevant boxes and look for any explanatory notes on the form. The dentist should be able to show/give you a blank form.

You can apply for income and contribution based ESA at the same time but the income related would likely consider your income also. Hope it helps.

If ESA is her only income and she doesn't have savings she might be entitled to free dental treatment on grounds of low income. You will need to complete HC1 form to apply, you can get it from dentist and possibly post office. Not sure if you can apply online
