The extension was signed off yesterday hooray and we now have a spare bedroom. After nearly five years I may possibly be able to go away for a whole week. A holiday! A real holiday! But I need to find someone to come and stay in said bedroom and care for mum while I am away. Any tips on what to check and how to go about this (or not) would be welcome. I've been so fixated on the building work that I haven't really thought about the carer.

Can't help with the answer to your question but would love to get away in my caravan but can't leave my OH at home as her family won't look after her and she won't allow non family members to live in or even sit with her if I go out for a few hours. Good luck.

Hi fortune

I would use a reputable care agency agency.
I would want to meet the carer beforehand to make sure they were a good fit for your Mum and introduce them in the lead up to the stay.
I would ask lots of questions based particularly on the needs of your Mum:
What provision is in place for covering sickness (of the carer).
How would emergencies be handled.
What their approach would be in certain situations, eg calming someone down, agression, etc

It's more difficult without knowing the situation with your Mum, for example if she is used to having carers. We tried a live in option with my folks for a week, which ended in an altercation. With hindsight the carer (who was independent and came through a recommendation) was out of her depth. I don't mention this to put you off, as live in is a good solution and important for you to be able to go away, just for you to be thorough in your search.

I hope you are able to find the right care. All the best. Georgina

Does it have to be a full-time cater or would a respite home also be an option? In any event, Social Services should be able to give you a list of care agencies and care homes, though they can't make recommendations.

In this case I look search for a really good agency who could place someone in your home, hopefully one that specialises in temporary placements. A reputable agency will/should do all the initial ground work for you and they usually have a bank of people that they use time and time again and could cover any emergencies that may crop up while you are away.

Lots of trained nurses take on these kind of temp posts and are usually willing to go anywhere in the U.K - the good ones generally stick with the same agency.

Would suggest you buy a copy of The Lady magazine just to check out. There is also a magazine aimed at the nursing profession, sorry cannot remember what it is called, think it is something like Nursing Times.

Dear Fortune, I can't really offer any practical advice but I certainly hope you get a holiday - you deserve it!! GC
