Fibre uses glass fibre instead of copper wires for all or most of the connection to the exchange, this allows a faster transfer of data. If your ISP is BT you probably know it as 'infinity'.

Are non web activities also slow
Starting up applications?
Opening large documents or images?

Hello nitram/ Steve115 and all who have responded to my thread

I have been giving this some thought and I have come to the conclusion that I am probably leading you on a 'wild goose chase'
I think perhaps I should try to correct all of my own mistakes and errors before I try to correct W10 on things that may not be at fault in the first place
I thank you all for your patience
One thing that has resulted from this ,is that it confirms my current fears about not being able to follow instructions , no matter how simple and self explanatory
I think perhaps I will post on another thread and try to explain my situation
Thank you once more
jimbo

Happy to help. We can use screen prints to get this sorted out. I can also call on my son if necessary who always helps me out when I am in a deep hole.

I was zeroing in on DNS problems for generally delayed connections.
DNS usually affects limited sites but Jimbo could have a deeper problem.
Jimbo's speed test showed that his system was IPv6 enabled.
If his DNS server did not recognise aaaa it would time out and then try a causing a delay.

Hi Nitram,

You are right to look at those things but I wonder whether some of your original questions might be more pertinent at this stage and easy to get answers i.e non web activities.

Last year I got a new laptop but got a lower spec machine which was slower than the previous machine. Initially I thought the machine was failing but in reality it was my expectations that were out of line.

I think that it is a good idea for Jimbo to start a new thread.

Hi jimbo. Before you write yourself off I thought you might like to know that I too hate windows 10 and so does my daughter - 25yrs old and VERY computer savvy (a bit of a geek in fact).

I've solved my problems by buying an iPad. VERY easy to use.

I am a complete *********
I have a Huddle 2, and I've ****** that up too
I have had trouble with it because of bad arthritis in my hands , and when I touch the screen I tend to lose everything

but I agree with you I will persevere to get it back on the internet , because even though I have problems I got on better with that than W 10

Hi Jimbo,

I think that there are a couple of problems with terminology which may be affecting your understanding.

W10 is the operating system for the whole computer. So by loading W10 onto your computer that is the system that will make it work. And that really is all you need to know; it is a W10 machine.

You state that you have a Huddle, a good machine, my friend has one.

You can obviously access the internet as you are using TP and have looked at information from other sites. You have also stated that you have used email.

I am not sure what is going wrong. Are your issues to do with speed of the machine or use of the Icons/symbols. Can you give us a little more detail. I suspect that there is not much wrong really.......

Regards
Steve

Update

Just a quick post on my use of W10
I have persevered over the past few days to come to grips with this*******
To be fair I have overcome some of my earlier frustrations , but a lot more needs to be done before I am happy with it ( if I ever will be )
One thing I have noticed , and I think (in my opinion ) that W10 means you have to go through lot of fine tuning to get what you want . whereas W7may not have been as definitive , it gave you an answer to your problems in a far more direct response
I'll still keep trying
but so far it's ruined my happy computer experience

Part of your problem is probably that things on W10 are organised differently from W7 and each release of W10 moves things around. You can expect the next release in March or April this year, most likely March.

As I posted earlier your email problems could have been because BT email was going through a bad patch as they upgraded some servers.

Lost Again

I am sure that those of you who have read or kindly responded to my faults ,will know that I am a 'proper idiot' on the computer
The long saga continues with my sad experience with W 10
I suddenly lost all my email contacts and was getting dozen of multi coloured stripes on my screen
The long and short of that was that Asus claimed the laptop had been dropped and would not repair it under warrantee
Disputed this and they said they would need to have the computer posted for examination( cost £ 46 inc postage etc, plus if they still considered it had been dropped,
the cost of repair

I saw the correspondence between the chap repairing the computer and Asus
so I am pretty sure he was being genuine
With all the hassle etc I decided to let him get a new screen and do the job himself
Ok Everything seemed fine
but I have noticed , and very frustrated, that it is so slow
I first thought it as BTso I checked speed
Download Speed 368.5
Upload Speed 98
Distance from exchange 1.3 miles

I don't know why I bothered because its all 'double dutch' to me
I have also noticed that the computer seems to be very slow in responding to any change in programmes I suppose I shall have to contact the chap who did the repair

To be honest I think I only posted this to relieve the frustration of my experience with W 10
Since my old programme W7 packed up on Boxing day I have so far had a miserable year with computers , and for many reasons , health and chronic hearing problems , the computer is my lifeline
S***** the computers , but thankyou for listening to my 'gripes'

Let's look at internet speed first.

Those speeds are very low.

Try the speed test you used before
http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest/speedtest2.html

If it is also slow take the laptop close to the router and try again, any better?

If you have an ethernet cable (also known as a network or LAN cable) connect with this to the router, any better?

The WiFi aerial on the laptop is often around the screen, this may have been disconnected/disturbed when the screen was changed.

If wireless is slow and ethernet is OK it might not be the aerial, it could be drivers. Rather than delving into drivers let's see if the aerial is around the screen.

If you post the make and model nu[/COLOR]mber I'll see if I can find where the aerial is fitted.

Not too serious edit

You seem to specialise in destroying laptops.
You can purchase rugged ones.
They come in two grades.
Indoor use - just generally dropping them.
Outdoor use - adds dust proofing, waterproofing etc - construction sites - military.
Several manufactures make them.
Their is a specialised supplier http://www.rugged-systems.com/products/rugged-laptops/
You might find it cheaper to buy two normal laptops and try to synchronise their contents!!

Surely, if the wireless is slow and it is much faster if connected by ethernet cable to the router, that does point to a problem with the wireless connection (which may be the wireless aerial)??

Absolutely.

Problem could be:-

Some recently introduced source of interference - most unlikely
Router - unlikely
WiFi drivers - maybe - the system has had some undefined trauma.
Laptop aerial - prime suspect due to recent work

Not sure if my comments will be relevant, but I loved windows 7 and when I bought a new laptop it had windows 8.1 on it, which I didnt like, but I had a computer man to bring me my ordinary desktop back, instead of those large icons. I had a few problems when it automatically upgraded me to Windows 10, (against my wishes), as I thought I had lost all my documents, but then I discovered a settings thing and I had to tick the box so that they showed up on the list of what was on my computer. I sometimes have problems but I usually find a restart solves them. I am also on a slower than average internet with no prospect of getting fibre in my area, but I did notice a difference in performance with the new laptop.

Having said that, I also have an ipad, which is very user friendly, but I find that I cant do certain things on it that I can do on the laptop.

I think if you get a computer technician in to help you, he can probably restore your laptop to a format that you are happy with

Thank you

I tried the Ethernet but it was no faster than the wireless
If it is due to the wireless aerial
Is this the sort of thing I need ???????
