Hello
I have just joined Talking Point.
My mum is in the advanced stages of dementia but is only in her early sixties. When we think back over recent years we can now see signs of when it started but we didn't recognise it as dementia at the time.
It is really only over the last 18 - 24 months that it has become apparent to us as dementia and we realise now that she hid it from us for some years. I'd really like to hear from people with early onset dementia or those caring for people with dementia.

Hello ajn.

I`m so sorry your mother has this condition at such an young age. We are hearing of so many young people being affected.

My husband doesn`t have early onset, as he was 73 whan diagnosed, even though it had been developing since he was 67. There are many on this site who do have experience of early onset and I`m sure you will hear from them in due course.

Welcome to Talking Point [TP] :)

Hi ajn,

My wife has early onset vascular dementia. She is 58 now, but has had symptoms for about 4 years. I have been her full time carer for almost 3 years

The biggest problem is the lack of services for early onset. In our area there is absolutely nothing, but I know in some areas you might find anything from a specialist nurse to a dedicated day centre.

Please contact me if you have any specific questions

Hi AJN.

My wife was 56 when diagnosed 6 years ago.

I agree with Dab 1630 there are many difficulties involved in getting facilities for EOA (Early Onset Alzheimers) patients but I am sure that the TP site could offer guidance and help with most of the specific problems that you are bound to come up against.

I am sure that one of the moderators will contact you shortly with helpful information on the various help that is available.

Hello AJN
My husband was diagnosed with EOD last year although he had been unwell for about 4 years previously. I would echo the replies of others regarding services for people who are young however I have found the local Alzheimers Society really supportive and helpful. Please contact yours they are a wealth of information , practical help and support and can point you in the right direction.
Good Luck with Mum and also look after yourself
Best Wishes Dee:)

Hi ajn, I am so sorry to read of your mother's condition.
Hard for her, and equally hard for the family to have to watch.

My partner was diagnosed when he was just 60, having been trying for 4 years to get a diagnosis. He is now in a care home, completely bedbound, in the last stage of dementia.

But what is there out here for your dear mum.? Well through our CPN, who was assigned to Lionel when he hit a 'suicidal' patch, we did manage to access 'day care'. This was in 04. He was attending 3 days a week by May 05. Took lots of shouting though.

The Alzheimer's Society can be a great help, especially if you have a good local branch.

If you are willing to let us have some more information about your dear mum, and the family circumstances.........(does mum live alone, how capable is she now?........that sort of thing, I am sure someone will be able to help you further.

We do have a "Younger persons with dememtia" section, where there are some very informative threads.

Welcome to TP.

Hello AJN
I am so sorry to hear about your mother. My mother, too, has early on set dementia. She is only 64 and can no longer do anything for herself. Lately she has been struggling with her speech and her comprehension. We have care in from 8 am till 9pm everyday to help my father with her care as he is exhausted emotionally, and physically as Mummy wakes early. It is so cruel. Please do get in touch if you want to chat, i've found TP really helpful, especially as friends who have no experience of this illness don't really understand what we're going through. All the best, VIB35

Hi my mum is is an EMI care home, she has had alzheimers/dementia for quite a few years now (the doctors think it is dementia with lewis bodies) Mum was deteriating quite fast before before we put her into the care home but either she seems to have got a lot worse since being there or because we are not with her every day we are noticing thing more, she also gets quite angry with staff at the home refusing point blank to do things such as washing or getting dressed. On a good day when I visit her I talk to her about the old days when she was young and she can remember bits, on bad days I just feel like going home when she is being horrible to everyone and insisting the staff are trying to kill her by poisioning her food (they all seem really nice to me). Just wondered if anyone else has parents in care homes who have problems.
