My father in law has Alzheimer's. He has carers in his home from 8.30am to 6.00pm 7 days a week. As soon as the carer leaves for the day, he tries to go out & my husband or I have to phone him to deter him (he has had several falls & we have been advised he should not go out alone). Anyone have any thoughts about what we can do to distract him/keep him in his flat? He lives in warden assisted accommodation but refuses to socialise, has no interest in reading, colouring, painting or anything else! Help please.

Could they put a dvd on when they leave?
My dad loved all the old comedies like dads army, only fools and horses, keeping up appearances, step toe TV

They didn't really have a plot so he could keep up with them.

These are great ideas, thank you both so much. He is just so restless all the time, won't sit down, wants someone with him but then doesn't talk to them & just paces up & down. The only thing he likes is playing dominoes but he can't play that alone. So tricky.

Just an idea. Will he listen to Music? Is there anything he can do in his flat? I think the idea of moving photo frame I'd brilliant.

I am going to ask the carer to try to 'teach' him solitaire with a pack of playing cards. Worth a try I guess.

giftbox

A friend of mine bought a giftbox for my mum. Someone has gone to a lot of trouble with it because it made a big difference to her mood. It was full of items and memorabilia from the 50s, including gardening pamphlets, an old newspaper, vials of aroma to bring back memories, old sweets. There was a DVD of the 50s which she must have watched dozens of times now
I could ask him where he ordered it from ?
