I am quite new to this all. Not sure if I've had my head in the sand or I've just let things go over my head..regarding my partners memory loss. I think it made it Very Real when he woke up and I realised he didn't know who I was! I am a firm believer in herbal remedies. I've read Ginkgo Bilbao? And Korean Ginseng are suitable for memory loss, dementia etc. Has anyone tried this?If so what sort of dosage...and what did you find? Also does anyone have any other suggestions?
One thing I've been wondering is when he forgets where he is..who I am etc...what is the best way to deal with it? Last time I calm tried to reassure him he belonged here and he was safe. I didn't overwhelm him with info. Not sure if that's the way to go or what?
Peace and love to all you lovely people ♡

My mother used ginkgo biloba for 5 years, as she doesn't have a clone not using, I don't know if it worked, but it didn't stopped dementia ( now she is in stage 7 and not using it)

Talk to GP. There are some reversibles causes of dementia that may be useful to verify.

I like the compassionate communication idea.

I am of the opinion that herbal remedies, coconut oil, turmeric...and prescribed medicines, don't work.

Oh, yes. Hello! :)

I have always found it best to agree to everything and quietly manipulate things in the background.

After all, if I thought black was white, it would take a dogged, energetic person to try to persuade me otherwise.

Avoid rows. :)

When Sue was attending the memory clinic and already had mild cognitive impairment we were advised to try Ginkgo as a means of possibly staving off full-blown dementia. It didn't help. You can't draw any conclusions from one case, of course, but because we had been using it I remember that round about that time there was some research which failed to find any benefit from taking it.

Reassurance is the the only action you can take when your Partner is showing a lack of where or who.

The herbal "Medicines" have not been shown to have any positive effects on the decline in Patients with Dementia. Take them, don't take them, dish them out, don't dish them out, it's up to you and your medical team. Just make sure that you follow the recommended dose and stop if there are any adverse effects. Oh and check first with the Certified Medical Experts and not, as some have done, with the Snake Oil Specialists who are only interested in getting your money.

I agree that many prescribed medicines are no better than the herbal remedies Gwen. And often their listed side-effects include the very symptoms they are supposed to be relieving!

There's a link below to a fact sheet about alternative remidies. In short none have really ever proved to be effective. I think it's fair to say that had anything ever been proved to work we'd all know about it and be using it.
As BR_ANA says without a clone not taking the medication you can never know if it works or not. The disease is so variable in it's timeframe that it would be difficult to prove anything. One member was still posting regularly and perfectly lucidly on here 16 years after diagnosis in others the decline is very rapid.
If you go down the alternative route watch out for scams, there are a lot of bogus claims being made out there by some pretty unscrupulous people.

Just to make people aware of this in the Terms and Conditions (not that anyone has done that yet):

3.12 Please do not promote, advocate or post unsubstantiated claims about alternative or complementary therapies on this site.

We would all love to know that all we need to do is use coconut oil or ginkgo biloba etc day and night and dementia was reversed. Trust me, if that was the case, it would be all over the news. Even the licensed dementia drugs don't actually do much!

As for your last paragraph, yes I think that's exactly the right thing to do.

Also, be aware that medicinal herbs can interact with other medications, either reducing or very much increasing their strength or efficacy., so should be used with caution where a person is on medication of any kind.
My husband tried ginkgo biloba in the early stages of his illness. The only effect he noticed was that it gave him a powerful headache every time he took it!

My husband was another who took Gingko Biloba religiously for years. It was recommended to my mother by a pharmacist friend so Dhiren , distressed by my mother`s dementia thought we should both take it.

It didn`t stop him getting dementia.

The jury`s out on whether or not it stopped me. Needless to say I no longer take it.
