I had a hip operation recently and my daughter has been looking after me and leaves tomorrow and I don't know if I can cope with my husband who has dementia on my own.

How much support are you currently getting with your own rehabilitation? If you still need post-operative support, you need to add that you're a carer. Tell those who are looking after you about your extra duties as a carer for your husband. If nobody knows, no one will help.

I have arthritis in every imaginable joint and am currently going through a big flare up. Bit different to you, I know, but it still counts for support. Get the information out to the relevant people, Lucy. I would, if I were you, xxxxxx

Phone the emergency SW if you haven't already got one and see what help you can get, either someone coming into the home to help or some emergency respite, when I was ill the SW arranged some respite for my husband to start the next day x

Thank You

As we live in a Retirement Village I do have some help. It is more the emotional side I am worried about because I don't have my usual energy levels. It will be lonely because my husband has no conversation and I am a people person and normally very social. I appreciate your replies.

Any dementia-friendly cafe's or social groups near you, where you could both go? Does hubby like going out, or won't he go out? I know this is something many of us have to deal with. My husband would never go anywhere.

Hi Lucy
Come on here and be cyber social with us. On another forum I'm in (to do with the narrowboat we own) someone is having a hip replacement and was asking about recovery times and what it's like, any tips I can pass on?
I was looking at moving into a retirement village but it's a bit difficult working our all the for's and against's the main one is the management charges which are putting me off a bit so still only thinking about it.

Hip 'Op' Tips

Hi Kevin

I had a freak accident not a bad hip but I was given a new hip and the first 6 weeks have been the hardest. They get you up very quickly and give you physio exercises and after a week I went to a rehab centre but they pushed me too hard and I ended up being re-admitted to hospital as the doctor thought I had an infection which in the end was not the case. So tell your friend that swelling and fluid build up is common. It is 4 weeks since my 'op' and I walk every day with crutches/walking stick - every other day I do exercises in the pool and normal exercises on the other days. My energy levels are low but each day I get a bit stronger. What I will say is I was very fit before my accident as I swim and walk a lot.

Re Retirement Villages - the sting in the tale are the charges but overall I am very pleased we took the decision to move here with A's condition. We were downsizing and looking at smaller properties when A was diagnosed so we changed course - I am quite young to be here. We bought independently and we are very lucky as we are the last one in the development and as we have a dog we were given permission to put gates up at each end so we have our own garden. We were also allowed to change the inside of the apartment so I gutted it 2 years ago and made it more open plan.

I hope this helps a bit.

Hips, 4 weeks is nothing, but should start to feel lots better soon. I was raring to go at 6 weeks! In fact, drove half way home after 6 week appt. I followed all the rules ( I think) and the only thing in the way was the opposite knee, which was replaced just under 6 months after hip. Three months later I was walking shingle -5miles of it- no problem.

I didn't have to cope with OH - his dementia journey was at the beginning, but was becoming apparent, which was a blessing.

I'm sure you will feel better soon. Get some help if you can and socialise - have you got friends who will visit and/ or take you out?
Good luck!
