Welcome! You will find help and support here. Could you tell us a little more? Has mum got a diagnosis? Are you her carer? Does she live alone?

Hi and welcome.
The time has arrived for mum to be in a more secure environment.
This will mean a Care Home, one that specialises in Dementia, many claim to do so, but only want quiet easy to handle, folk, look for one that capable of handling all aspects, including end of life.
This will avoid any unfortunate housing moves in the future.

Hi @Helen red . You sound really overwhelmed!

Did your mum leave the house last night? I notice you’re posting in the early hours. My dad did that to me and the police phoned at 3am for me to go and settle him. I didn’t sleep that night!

Dad getting lost made me think that it was time to look into carehomes but I didn’t move him immediately. Dad lived alone but I could lock his front door and leave him access to his garden which was secure so he couldn’t get out and get lost again but I did arrange for carers for him. Have you spoken to Social Services to get a needs assessment for your mum? Visiting carers may help to keep your mum settled for the short term and will help with your anxiety. Dad’s carers were wonderful and reported back to me so I knew what he was up to and whether he needed anything so I didn’t have to visit so often.

Everyone seems to be struggling since lockdown but I think some daycare is starting to open up again and in the meantime visiting carers would offer a bit of company for your mum.

Once someone starts wandering and getting lost, you are in a completely new ball game as it is almost impossible to stop them doing this.

If you live nearby you can get door alarms that will alert you when the door is opened so that you can go and look for her and you can use the Herbert protocol to register her with the police so that when they are called out because she has gone missing it will speed up finding her, but I have to be honest and say that when mum started doing this the only way it was prevented was when she moved to a secure care home.
