I did some research into this on the change to XenForo by forcing my laptop into different screen sizes and orientations.

XF looks at the settings, attempts to get the most useful display sometimes with limited success.

I'll see if I can find my old posts, they may have been on the test forum and therefore lost.

I can't locate my example screen grabs.

When you connect to any website it first queries details about your device, it's operating system and display settings.
It then attempts to format how data is displayed, in a simple case with well identified received data, it would put additional info in a side column on landscape and on a bottom bar on portrait.

Things are not simple though, there is a large number of operating systems and ever changing versions in use and, especially with mobiles, a vast variety of screen sizes. The limit on mobile screen size has been the size of hip pockets, this is changing as folding screens are being introduced introducing more problems.

Useragents are used in identifying a system.
I just looked up how many different useragents there are, https://developers.whatismybrowser.com/useragents/database/ identifies 24,340,609

Obviously DTP has to deal with far less, and many have common characteristics, the list breaks down to
https://developers.whatismybrowser.com/useragents/explore/

You can see that Android alone has 13,989,021 , clicking on the entry https://developers.whatismybrowser.com/useragents/explore/operating_system_name/android/ lists the most common

Updating the OS on your device may change things - no guarantee which way!

Indexing problem
< @Izzy you might find https://forum.alzheimers.org.uk/threads/img-code.1252/ nostalgic>

I clicked on the 'Welcome and how to use DTP' forum.
Instead of the forum opening I got an archival post.
I've tried a few more times.
Mostly it opens correctly.
So far I have had three archival posts with no duplication.
I have been relaunching browser and clearing cookies between attempts.
The 3 rogue posts are:-

https://forum.alzheimers.org.uk/threads/making-link-in-oe-active.2493/ .
https://forum.alzheimers.org.uk/threads/folders-for-private-messages.2547/ .
https://forum.alzheimers.org.uk/threads/img-code.1252/ .

Interestingly although in https://forum.alzheimers.org.uk/thr...ng-point-after-our-update.120524/post-1697686 isolated links to the forum were not unfurling I had to use the appended full stop work around to prevent unfurling on the 3 rogue posts.

EDIT
I've successfully posted at the end of https://forum.alzheimers.org.uk/threads/img-code.1252/
This time an isolated link did not unfurl.

The complete thread appeared on the first page of the forum.
Looks as if an archived 'welcome to...' forum has been tacked onto the end of the current 'welcome to...' forum.
No idea why I sometimes jump to random old posts instead of the forum.

EDIT 2
Realised overnight that forum restructure was before migration it must have been like this for some time.

I use my own dropdown list from the favourites bar to navigate DTP

Changing the URL from

https://forum.alzheimers.org.uk/whats-new/posts/ .
to
https://forum.alzheimers.org.uk/whats-new/posts/?skip=1 .
will remove the box and both read and unread posts will be listed.

Read will be in black, unread in blue

The result is the same as 'what's new' scrolling down and clicking 'view more' at the bottom of the truncated list except that you don't have to scroll down the truncated list to carry on down the list.

I used to use the search for conversations by a participant fairly often.

Just wanted to do such a search and found the facility appears to have gone.

EDIT
Not gone, found it under 'filters', tested and it works.

I used to be able to find my thread by scrolling back a few pages of posts but due to the new system of only displaying new posts I cannot do that anymore. So now I have to do it by clicking on Your threads. But the threads now don't open on the last page they only open on the very first one, which is annoying. So I have to click on Last page from there but I cannot do that at the top of a page, only at the bottom, so I have to scroll down every time. Isn't there any way of making this easier? Couldn't we have the navigation at the top of the page as well? And I really really miss the long list of threads, read and unread.

Hi there, I haven’t been on here for months, mainly due to data issues as I only have my phone. But wanted to come back and see how everyone is coping and share a few of my experiences. As things have changed I am a little rusty but I’m here with my oilcan and raring to go.

Thank you nitram, but I find all these manouvres very complicated, and I'd love a reply from an admin about what's possible from their side, if that's ok.

hi @Beate
maybe put a watch on your thread

if you go to Your threads ... click on the time in the right hand column which takes you to the latest post

on New posts untick the Show only unread at top left then all posts appear in chronologocal order

What's new has chronologocal list of latest posts both read and unread

sorry if this isn't what you mean

Except that 'watch' is a grade below unreliable ie rarely works!!

What's new is truncated, click on 'more' goes to the top, you have to scroll down through the truncated list to see 'more'

As posted 'Show only unread ' can be made default by using the filter.

Also as posted neatest solution is a shortcut to https://forum.alzheimers.org.uk/whats-new/posts/?skip=1 .

Does anyone know how to switch off those automatic site alerts from admin about certain threads? It's getting on my nerves.
